Just bought another Valk.  This one has a California emissions cannister on it. Not too unusual as I'm in Arizona and a few are bound to filter over the border.

I was cleaning it up and noticed the diagram in the side cover that shows what was added for CA and whoa, that is a bunch of spaghetti that was added!  Tubing everywhere!!

So, 2 questions:

1. Do I have to remove the charcoal cannister to attach the lift adapter (an original RW spoonland) ?

2.  If so, can I run the bike with just the cannister removed or is a full desmog neccessary?  At this point with a new bike  a desmog is well down the list of things to do , but I don't want to hamper performance.

Your advice will be appreciated.

The canister should not interfere with the lift adapter. It does with a center stand though.

Many of us have desmogged California bikes, some of us have had issues including me. Just removing the canister and plugging lines is probably not an option. The Cali carbs have 6 extra ports on them for emissions, it turns out to be a cluster f@#ck. I ended up buying a used set of non-Cali carbs and installing them on my bike. I am much happier now!  cooldude

You can remove the canister I did mine with no ill effects.  All the tubes blow into it don't plug the tubes repeat don't plug them.  Just zip tie the tubes to the others the are next to it.  I don't think my lift adapter would work with it on either.

The lift adapter I use did not interfere with the canister before I desmogged. Different ones may.

As mentioned . . . just remove the canister. Zip-tie the related tubing together and leave to hang free.  The lines with vapor going into the canister are all in exhale mode headed for the outside atmosphere. Save the canister on the outside chance you may need it at a later date. sheets

Never had the pleasure of working with a Cal bike but most charcaol canister set ups will have at least 1 hose going into the intake, this is to draw off and burn any hydrocarbons that have gathered in the canister. IE fumes from the gas tank when stopped.
So 1 line may need plugging. Would need a good look at the schematic to be sure

I had to pull the can to install the 'Stays on bike' lift adapter. It came out with two hoses on it. It's in the cellar in a bucket. I didn't plug or pull or tie anything, cause I couldn't figure out where the hoses went. That was 14K miles ago, with no affect to the bike, no smells, leaks that I can see.

Thanks for all your input, guys.  Just checked again and the adapter definately will not fit with the cannister in place.  So I will try the remove and bundle but not plug approach and see what happens.

I mounted the RIVCO center stand on my CA bike, and they gice you a little arm to move the cannister further out, to clear the stand. Should be able to do the same for the lift adapter.

I lost my arm, so I just took a piece of flat stock, drilled 2 different size holes in it, painted, and mounted. Worked fine.
