I have read a lot of "petcock" threads..........but have not seen this one, to the best of my knowledge anyway....... I used to be able to turn my petcock to "off"........and run the carbs out of fuel. Now, I turn it to "off".......and it will keep running......and running.......... Everything seems to be normal. No fuel leakage anywhere.......but "off".......does not seem to work anymore??? It is a '99 Tourer with about 10,000 miles on Her........

I had the same problem. The ball & seat has likely failed. You are now relying on the rubber vacumn diaphragm to shut off your fuel when the engine is turned off. Time for a new petcock.

If you've had the tank off recently, the petcock may be rotated a bit so that it doesn't move freely. This binding can cause the petcock ball not to seat properly. If that's the problem, the petcock can be rotated to eliminate the binding. Either way the problem needs to be remedied before the dreaded hydrolock pays you a visit. Until the problem is eliminated I'd suggest you bump the starter button once when starting. If you hear a clunk sound do not hit the button again until the plugs are removed and the bike is out side. Gas will spray all over when you hit it with the plugs out.

I believe that is a common problem and sometimes its never known to exist.. That little ball has to sit perfectly in place to stop the flow.. You won't have that problem with a Pingle..

What happened with mine was a blocked orifice in the petcock. Does not let the vacuum bleed of. It is very fine in the pressed in check valve holder in the petcock housing. Cheers Steve

Now that everyone mentions it....... I DID just recently have the tank off..........to install a K&N air filter (no prefilter).........and the bike runs MUCH better, by the way......... But I am extremely careful, when working on anything...........the fuel positions seem to click as they normally should...........after the reinstall..........????? Maybe the petcock CAN go bad..............by just being there......... Quite strange........I must say..........

Easy to check, turn the petcock off, remove the fuel hose and check for flow. Then apply vacuum to the petcock and it should not flow while in the off position, if it does there is a fair chance the petcock is not aligned to the selector knob/lever. Release the vacuum and the turn the valve to on or reserve, if fuel flows the vacumm is not releasing. Cheers Steve

I already KNOW, that I have plenty of flow. The bike keeps running, even in the "off" position.......it never used to......... I am afraid that if I yank the hose off, I will have six gallons of gas running everywhere. I now have a "Pingel" fuel valve, on the way.......... As soon as it arrives, the fun job of siphoning all the gas out of the tank, shall begin. That first mouthful, is BAD.........it is even worse, if you lose the prime, and have to do it again!!! LOL!!!

I would LOVE to!! Just can't find the time anymore! THAT is why I like to "run out" my carb's after a "short", by most standards......ride, because I never know when I can get back on Her......... Once those carb's get all gummed up, the bike will NEVER run the same again!!! I don't care how many times you "clean" them! Been there, done that!! My Father let His bike go that far once, and ONLY once!! We messed with those carbs for a whole Summer!! It ran!!!! Just not ever as well, as it used to run........

Jeeez man...It's 2012. Don't drink gas. For like $7 get a small pump like this. http://www.harborfreight.com/fluid-siphon-pump-93290.htmlAlso just because it keeps running does not mean the vacuum side is not working. It only shuts off after you turn the motor off. Still a leap of faith pulling the hose off tho. While it's running pull the vacuum line off the petcock and see if it shuts down after a couple minutes.

First thing I'd try is to loosen the bolt that actually holds the knob/assembly to the motor mount and wiggle the thing around a bit. It can be cocked just a little which causes things to bind, then tighten it back up.
