Tried to remove the alternator mounting bolts the other day and they turn just a fraction then go real tight. Im afraid to pull any harder because Im sure they will snap and I will be in a pickle. Its a 98 standard. Any ideas on getting them out without breaking them? Raymond

Spray some penetrating oil on them as well and let it soak in a few days.

Tap the heads of the bolts with a hammer repeatedly along with the methods the others describe.
The middle alternator bolt has been missing {broken off} for God knows how long on my '99. No ill effects at all, the top & bottom bolts are holding it just fine. Not the end of the world if the middle bolt breaks. Cool I stuck a chrome plug over the hole, I'll deal with it when I need to pull the alternator in the future.  cooldude
Steel bolt in an aluminum case can be a PITA!

Penatration oil, heat (warm bike good enough), tighten it back up, and then repeatedly loosen/tighten, to work the bolt loose.

When I didn't follow this method, I just tried harder to remove, I broke a fender rail bolt off, and had to heli coil it.

My wife's hair dryer worked for me not long ago. I also used pentrating oil and a small hammer.
Be patient, just think of all the time and effort you will save yourself if you don't break a bolt.

However you get it out use a thread chaser (NOT a tap!) before you reinstall it with LOTS of Antisieze!. I also used a vacuum cap with some grease to cover the exposed threads on the middle bolt.
