Author Topic: Mounting a Trunk Rack??  (Read 1065 times)

I've got the trunk from an interstate and have gotten a rack for it and could use some information before I mount the rack. I noticed that the trunk lid is actually two layers of plastic that are sealed. The two parts (inside and outside) don't come apart like the lids on some other trunks do so it's hollow in there. SO do I drill through both and mount from within the inner portion of the trunk lid, or do I widen the hole in the inner portion of the lid to enable the mounting screw heads to get in to the outer portion of the lid? If you have a rack on your trunk, how is yours mounted?

Mine is mounted through both layers, with rubber washers on both sides.

Make sure and use a low profile head on the underside.
I did some damage to a helmet from the screw heads rubbing against the helmet.

Good luck

My lid is mounted through both. I just replaced the washers because of moisture in the trunk, with new plumbing washers, no more moisture.

factory rack had small tube spacers to keep the bolts from crushing the two layers together.

I drilled thru both layers, and started to drill the inside with a hole-saw bit. Thought that I might actually damage the outer shell due to the curvature, so just bolted it thru the two layers. Don't torque it down, just snug. All the pressure will be downward so the bolts just have to hold it in place with a little pressure for the rubber washers.

Mine's bolted through both layers without any spacer.  I have the Kuryakyn one, not the Honda one.

What I did to protect the helmets inside: Get the felt pad circles with adhesive backing (for attaching to the bottom of table legs to protect the floor) and stick those suckers to the bolt head/trunk liner:

The Kury rack came with dome-headed allen key bolts instead of a hex bolt:

It's been mounted for about a year now with no leak problems, but I used clear silicone sealant when I fastened everything.

I used star washers on the top outside trunk and a bigger plate inside ,,,if you load the trunk rack it will start to break the area around the screws ,,it works great ...
