He passed 1 year ago today. I don't believe I even posted about it on here. He was 16 years my senior and in many ways was the father my father was not. Don't get me wrong... my ol'man loved me and didn't beat me or anything... but he was a drunk, and we just didn't do a lot together.
Chuck, was a mentor to me in a lot of ways. hunting, fishing and working. He was smart, having worked as an engineer in the government defense industry for many years.
He had polio as a child, and struggled with physical challenges his whole life. He had diabetes bad as he got older and lost a leg to that. He spent the last 2 of his 58 years in bed, and was not happy. The end, when it came, was a relief to him I am sure. It was a surprise, but not totally unexpected. No one thought it would come as soon as it did.
Well, we gathered in Edisto Island, South Carloina today to spread his ashes in the salt marsh. A place he really loved to be. We put some in a couple places, and held a few back. I will be taking some to his favorite place to deer hunt, and Squealy and I will take some to western PA where he grew up, and leave some there as well.
Chuck... I miss you, but I know going was a release from torment for you. Be cool brother.

We have all had a lot of fun so far. There are like 18 of us from Indiana here and we've all made a vacation of it. We are staying all week.
I did about 10 minutes of stand up at his wake. We called it a "Chuck Roast".
He and I talked about his death and wake many times, and I know he wanted us all to remember the good times, and smile and laugh, not be sad.

Jabba, it's one of the saddest facts of life, having to come to terms with a loss like this. I personally know the pain all to well and I feel for you. A tribute like what you just did is a real good thing.

Jabba, just to add to this... I ride my Valk for my brother. It was his Valk, bought new in 2000. We lost him to Congestive heart failure almost 3 years ago. We did close to the same for him. Some of his ashes were scattered under a covered bridge deep in the woods of Connecticut with a whole bunch of his riding buds... The rest of his ashes are being buried with my Dad in Maine. We also celebrate his life... We will all meet again. Good on you for the tribute to your brother. |
