Obviously, it's some kind of distributor or magneto running off the cam but that's all I can tell from the picture.  Anybody have any details?  What is the distributor from, how did it work etc..

All I can tell you is thats a Super Charger system.
Looks like the distributor is working off the right side crank.
Belt pully added to the center.

Maybe 2 Brothers Racing??

It's got a remote coil, so it's no magneto.  You can see 7 spark plug wires coming from the dist cap - 4 on "bottom" layer, 3 on "top".  Most likely has an ignition module tucked away inside the cap somewhere and triggered by a magnet wheel to control the coil.

It would have to be mounted to the belt cover to allow for timing adjustments, and just driven from the cam gear somehow.

Where'd you find the pics of it?

surely looks like one of the two distributors on my BMW 12 cylinder. same as a single distributor on a bmw 6 cyl.

I found the picture here: http://www.timskelton.com/valkyrie/tech/supercharger.htm

BMW car distributor eh?  That's intriguing.  I guess something like this could solve the problem of not being able to take timing out in blower/nitrous applications.  Looks cool too.

Googling "bmw 6 cyl distributor" brings up a couple of images of the cap that match that one exactly, but I haven't been able to find one of the distributor itself to see the drive mechanism.

My Bimmer 6 cyl has 6 coils though, so no help there.  Grin

older ones have a single coil. my 1990 has one coil and one distributor for each bank of 6 cylinders.

Same problem here.  Lots of pictures of the cap...none of the actual distributor.  I might have to go to the wrecking yard and yank one to see for myself.

This is about the best I could find:

#4 here drives the rotor, it appears:

#7 here is the pulse generator, 11/12/13 make up the rest of the distributor:

and this would appear to be the coil (if they used a BMW coil):

I don't think it'd be too difficult to make a plate/shaft to drive the rotor drive from the OE cam gear:

Wondering if this was built in Europe where parts like that are more plentiful.

Same concept, different engine.  The one in the youtube video (first post) has a Chevy distributor coming from a drive on the back of the head.
