Got back Sun. morning from a 60 mile canoe trip down the Allegeheny with the scouts. Saw 11 bald eagles, 6 deer including one baby that was sleeping where I found 2 good trees for my hammock, mom came to get him through camp at about 3 AM, a porucipine, bunch of squirrles, a bass (BIG) took flight next to our canoe, a carp fight, a bunch of herons, 100's of wood ducks (lots of babys) lots of geese, and a couple mallards.

Started Wed night, landed on a island and made camp after about 700 yards. Up the next morning and did 21 miles, then 23 miles, then 14, and finished Sun. morning with 2. Pretty good trip, only one problem child. Almost all of them packed in a single back pack.

Here's my favorite picture... can you dive head-first off that dock?

No idea. The river was anywhere from inches to 8-10 feet or better in places. I was busy herding cats.  uglystupid2

Had to think about where that was. That was a dock at a boat launch at about 7:30 am Thurs morn. There is a municipal park there with a flush toilet. Made a good place to pull out and check everything since that was the first whole day.

That is a lot of miles canoeing for 1 day let alone 3 days or so each about 20 miles per day.  You and the group of scouts must be in pretty darn good shape or sore than all heck after that kind of workout for 3 days straight.

Lets put it this way, there were no problems with any of them staying awake to the wee hours of the morning.  cooldude The core group that goes with us all the time is in pretty good shape. They just finished the hiking merit badge, last stroll was 20 mi though the woods with 5 10's before, and we have gotten into backpacking a lot more. So even if we are going in 2 mi, they (we) get a workout.  My son was checking out his guns in the mirror when we got back. Thw wife was laughing at him a bit.

This old man is a little sore, then again the USS Fat Guy was the canoe that was always moving to a problem area. I was with the scoutmaster and we were cutting up the whole trip. Went through one set of rapids with our heads bent down laughing. Would have been screwed if we hit anything.

I am really glad we did 14 on the last big day, I was cooked and that was enough. Between the heat and the work, when we beached at about 1:30-2:00 I set up the hammock and took a snooze, woke up, made a cup of coffee and lunch, and took another snooze before dinner. The boys were in the river swimming and swamping canoes....... If only you could bottle youth...

great trip, I need to pass this on to my grandson who is working on his Eagle, hopes to finish later this year. That would make a great trip for his troup.

We went from Tidioute and stopped in Kennerdale. The islands were part of the ANF (Alegehenny Nat Forest) and you can camp in any nat forest. The 2 camps we stayed at near Franklin and Kennerdale are state parks.

You are close enough to make the same trip.

Fall would probably be good, depending on rain. There was about the perfect amount of water for us, not to fast, and not to shallow. Only got the USS FatGuy grounded 3 times where the navagator had to get out and pull some.
