From time to time, I will pull up Wimp.com or PeopleofWalmart.com, just for laughs and to kill some time. This video really struck me, I found it very moving. Watch to the end, that's where it got to me. http://www.wimp.com/deafwoman/

I think that's been posted before, but your right. It's a very moving story. (And on the Ellen show to boot. Who'd-a-thuk it?) I had a deaf lady who worked for me quite a few years ago. The company paid for me to take a sign language class, and I got to where I could communicate with her pretty well. I was also introduced to "deaf culture" That was an eye opener. I never got good enough that I'd have felt comfortable trying to communicate with native signers out in the world, but I could get my idea or point across, and if they were really interested in communicating with me, they could slow down enough for me to understand them. The sweet lady passed away a few years back, and my sign skills have diminished to almost non-existent. I did enjoy those rudimentary skills though. Our department was able to communicate with each other through closed windows and in noisy environments. We were surprised at how convenient it was on several occasions. It must use a different part of your brain or something because I found that I could speak on the phone at the same time I signed to people in the room with me. That was surprisingly convenient. I could consult with people in the room, real time, as I spoke with another department on the phone.

My wife is hard of hearing, and we have had numerous Deaf friends over the years. While my sign language has rusted some, we still use it. We sometimes try to use it across crowded tables when we don't want to interrupt but need to communicate something simple when we're at opposite ends. Most people stop their conversations and watch us, so we abjectly fail at not interrupting.
