Work sucks _Let's ride

West Virgina

« on: June 16, 2012, 04:20:41 AM »

Just mounted a new rear tire on his gsxr600 and told him to ride a couple miles down the road to make sure everything felt good . Every thing was feeling good until a lady appeared to make eye contact with him and still pulled out of a gas station in front of him .
Nathan has only been riding for 4 months or so = 4000  miles +- but was doing every thing right..had been riding near the centerline for visability and when he saw that there was no missing her he laid the bike to the right and missed the direct hit ,hitting the rear quarter panel at kinda of a glancing blow...mostly with his foot and leg .The bike slid down the asphalt for several yards grinding up the fairing and ground a hole in one engine cover .
Mostly peed off that his bike is tore up...we can fix it...and peed off that he can't ride with his buddies . He has some stiches in his fingers , a hard cast on his ankle...has to have that re looked at on Sunday when doc is in . He's a lucky young man to get out of it with no more injury that he did.
We live only a 1 1/2 mile up the road and he called right away so his bike was still in he road leaking oil and the lights on when we got there...scary scene...but I got the bike up ...ran back to the house a grabbed a trailer while he and Deb dealt with the accident report , got the bike home and on the lift  , then spent the next 4 hours at ER .

Experience is a hard teacher, it gives you the test first, and the lesson after.  Hard way to learn a valuable lesson.  Glad he's not too badly injured.

I'm very happy to hear his injuries were minor as this could have been alot worse. A lot of bikes just don't have enough lighting on them. My son had a Busa and we installed a headlight modulator to flash either the high or low beam and it made a huge difference in visiblity of the bike..We also alter the tailight to make them more visible. We  (bikers) have to make people notice us and we have to still drive like they don't. Good luck to the lad and heal quickly.

Could have been so much worse, glad that he'll ride another day.

Almost got nailed last weekend by a guy pulling out of a church.  He was sitting there on his cell phone at a dead stop, looked me in the eye (we were that close, he had blue eyes) and then proceeded to pull out infront of me.  Couldn't believe it.  I layed on the horn, grabbed all the brakes I could find and prepared to take a route I really didn't want to take.  Thankfully, he stopped about a third into my lane and I was able to slide by him.  Scared the crap out of me and my passenger.  As we all know, riding safely, isn't enough, you gotta watch out for those who seem intent on killing us.

Given enough time, he'll be back up and riding and a little more knowledgeable about those "other" people.

I'm glad he got away with minor injuries.  It's a tough thing to happen that early in his riding experience.

... but was doing every thing right ... and when he saw that there was no missing her he laid the bike to the right ...

I don't want to be critical, but I hope you meant he brought the bike to the right and not that he "laid it down."  There is almost never a correct time to intentionally put the bike on the ground, but it is the instinctive thing to do.  I did say almost never.

If he hasn't already gotten some training, have him get some soon.  What happened was not his fault, but training can assist him in mitigating the effects of other drivers' irresponsible actions.

Laying it down is a term I used to say that he was making a hard swerve to the right, hence the bike was leaning rather than a head on tbone that would have no doubt resulted in a catapult over or into the car . And I agree that what ever training we can get....may be just the one split second thought or reaction we need to help us avoid a crash or lessen our injuries.
Stiff and sore this morning ...but wanting to ride...maybe he will take my Magna out for a short putt tomm.....Still really peed off that it happened......hard to make him understand that ...S%^&T happens and we have to pick up the pieces and go on with what we have left

Not to be critical in anyway, but I agree. Training can and will save in many other ways.

Glad to hear it wasn't worse and that he'll be OK... Sad

Given similar experiences, when in town or on the road, I assume that any cage driver has not seen me,
so I down shift and prepare to stop on a dime.  ???

I do this even when eye contact takes place. This has saved my taking a fall or been run over
at least 4 times this year in L.A. traffic.  Embarrassed

I've learned that eye contact does not mean the other person "saw" you. Undecided

Hope he gets better soon. Lips Sealed

I am very sorry to hear of Nathan's injuries but grateful they are not worst and he will heal .
As most of you know my wife and I had a serious accident on May 1. We got very lucky.
If I may suggest, he should hire an Attorney right away.
In New York State Motorcycles is not covered by "No Fault Insurance" and you have to pay extra for Medical Coverage. Also get the "Uninsured/ Under insured clause on the policy.
Having all that really saved me a lot on bills. I have health insurance through my job, but this insurance saved me plenty on deductibles and co-pays.
I do not want to sound like I am selling insurance, but believe me it saved my butt. The 27 y/o female who turned in front of us had 2 felony suspensions on her license, never came over to us or called 911. driving her boyfriends minivan with minimal insurance. She was arrested and cited for failure to yield. Nobody is protecting us on two wheels, we need to protect our selfs.
I hope all works out for Nathan.
