Hey all
I am trying to help a friend battery goes dead. Alternator seems to be working ok. New battery starts and runs ride it around shut it off and wont restart. You can jump it with a car battery at least at first you could? Now i guess it wont do that. I have the manual and gonna go help him this weekend. He thinks its the starter and as a rebuild kit on order for it. If anyone as any suggestions I am all ears. He may be right.

check ground connections and the 55A fusable link for starters. Any accesories wired in that may be draining power? Do all other electics (guages, lights) work properly?
Start with easy stuff like fuses and lights that are not right, shorts maybe or any wiring that has been messed with previously

Are you sure its a good battery? If you have a weak battery, they will crank over, but not enough juice to fire....
And especially with all the heat in most areas lately, a battery can up and take a Sh#$ when you least expect it.......
How old is the battery adn will it take a charge on a charger... If possible is there a know GOOD battery you can try?
If it will start from a jump, I would say its the battery..... been there, done that and MANY posts on here with the same story and outcome....... Bad battery.... betcha a Dollar!

If you can put both jumper leads direct on the starter, this will bypass all the wiring. If it starts there it is in the wiring, if not then the starter is most likely at fault.

Have you looked in Shop Talk or the archives for starter switch maintenance ?? I'd recommend that and looking for loose or dirty connections, especially the battery ground connection near the left foot peg.. That'll probably fix it,, but,, if it doesn't I'd look at the starter solenoid..

You said the bike runs after a jump start? Then put a volt meter on it, and see what charging you have at the battery.
The some of the other suggestions about looking for the fuseble link from the Alt to battery makes sense, and the like, will help out.
I'm thinking of the starter switch. The starter relay/wiring.
But mostly, until otherwise proven, you have a faulty battery, which needs replacing.

I havent seen the valk myself I am repeating what i have been told. It does have a brand new battery and it killed it. I will get my hands on it Saturday and get to the bottom of it. Thanx for all the advice.

I know it doesnt sound right but the info I posted is what I was told and not really the case when I got my hands on it. He thought battery was dead or starter failed when really it was hydro locked and battery and starter was ok.
