Day 29 and 30

6/15-6/16  2012

Meyers, CA to Ely, NV to Sego Canyon, UT

9:30PM  6/16

A great night in the Big Meadow National Forest.  A beautiful area.  And camping how it should be...

Packed up and headed towards the town of Meyers for my daily WIFI at McD's.    Destination was Ely, NV or somewhere around those parts.  Spent way too much time, and soon it was 11:00AM.  First stop was at the Harbor Freight Tools in Carson City to pick up a new spare tire for the trailer.  A nice around the Western perimeter of Lake Tahoe, then picked up US 50.   By the time I got the tire, and filled up with fuel, it was almost 12:30......A very late start for the ride.  But while at the McDonalds, I spotted this way cool car.........

US 50 through Nevada is known as the “Lonliest Highway”.  Very appropriate.  Long, long stretches with no signs of any civilization.  Ever.  A very unique road, and very enjoyable.  After leaving Carson City, the first town was about 60 miles.  Very little traffic with plenty of high desert to enjoy.  Here is my first shot of the road...

Very desolate yet peaceful.  About two hours into the ride, I was at the famous Middlegate Station.

Used for the Pony Express and what not......Here, you can read about it!!

Checked out the inside.......Interesting little place....

Still a couple hundred miles to go, I was determined to make Ely.  Just enjoying the ride, and nothing really jumped out for photos........Deciding I needed a shower, I bypassed my intended campground at the Illiwah Reservoir, and headed towards Ely.  Many dumps to choose from, I selected the White Pines Motel.  It was “vintage”.  Just fine for $43.00.  It had a microwave, fridge, a shower!! (yes, I was in need) and a really cool 1985 tube TV on a wall mount!!  Spent the evening chilling, and upload a bunch of images to photobucket.

Leaving town this morning, I grabbed a few shots of the downtown area.....Or is it uptown???

Continued on 50........Destination, the Sego Canyon, about 30 miles East of Green River, UT.  The ride on 50 was great.  Here are some images from US50, then a few along I70/50 heading East.

The coordinates I had for the park worked flawlessly, and soon I was in the Sego Canyon.  Talk about a great campsite!!  Here it is...........

Set up camp, made some dinner, took a bunch of pictures at sunset, (those will be in the next report) and now I'm enjoying the embers from my fire...The silence here is deafening.  There is no noise!  A few moments ago, I heard a small rumble.  Thought I might have a visitor, so I went to find my defense mechanism......Bear repellent.  Turned out it was a freight train about 8 miles away.

That's it for today.  Tomorrow....heading to Denver!

Can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate you taking us along on this adventure.  Envy does not begin to describe how I feel about not sharing some of that scenery with you.

I doubt I'll ever be able to take such a trip but, I sincerely thank you for allowing me to come along in this way.  Way Cool photos.  Keep it up and I'll see you at Inzane.  I'll be the guy on a great looking Black Standard with that cool red skunk stripe.  Can't miss me.  Wink

Great report, brings back some memories of me on Hwy 50 on several 2 lungers, some mix oil & gas, 2 stroke - ring a dings) and some 4 strokers.

Added June 22nd, at 12:05 AM.

Nice lookin 58 Impala.    I had a red/white, with the 348 tri power and Powerglide.      It was a runnin jack rabbit.    Ate gas but back then $.329 a gallon, so who cared.     That was my last Chevy, went to Ford and kicked my arse ever since.      Went back to Chevy's in 78, I think it was and then Settled in on Mopar's, been with them ever since and have not regretted it.

Went through a bunch of 440's, 426 Hemi's and the like.    Had 340 Little Red Wagon when they 1st hit the market.   Loved it but NO room for anyone other than a passenger.    That little Hot Rod engine was very healthy.   Raced it at thew race track and ruined it before it's time.    Sure glad I grew out of that task.  Rear ends and rear tires got very expensive, but, I got a hell of a lot of exercise working on Mopar's, and Chevies in the process.

As I type this, I"m in KC.   A few more days before I"m back in St. Louis.  Going to visit with some old friends, then meet up with my new friend Bon S tomorrow.  Probably head back on Saturday/Sunday....Almost 8000 miles for the trip.

Absolutely love your reports. The pictures, as usual are over the top. I especially enjoyed the '58 Impala. In my opinion the coolest car Chevy ever made. Far and away a cooler car than the '57.

You really have a gift for knowing when to stop and take a picture

I go past a spot and think yep that is a great pic but most of the time dont find a place to stop

I am just at 3100 miles so far on this trip  you have set the bar quite high

Look forward to your posts like I did the Gilligan and Navigator posts that inspired me to make the trip I am on now

Hey Oss, keep up the good riding....looking forward to hearing about your adventures.  I'm still a few days behind on reports.  But will probably finish up today.....

As to finding spots to shoot?  Well, they just appear!!  Often I'll be riding and "see" the shot.  Many times will have to make a U turn, then pull over......But more times than not it is stopping on the road.  Advantage to taking the back roads.
