I have a 2001 interstate
Last weekend I had went to breakfast about 50 miles from home. All went well.
Back roads and such.
On the way back home I was cursing interstate doing about 70mph in 5 gear.
I felt what seemed like the bike came out of gear for about ½ second then went right back in. That is the second time I have felt the jerk in the last 6 months.
It feels almost like it slipped a tooth on the drive shaft or something.
I tried to get it to do it again the rest of the 30 miles home. No luck…
Any idea’s?

That would be my bet as well....You need to check it out and soon it's very possible it's too late .

With Eric, have had the same thing happen a few times, just like it comes out of gear then goes back in. Has not happened for quite awhile now. But if the rear has not been inspected for sometime  it would not hurt to check and re-grease, included the uni in the inspection

If it's not fully in gear it will pop out like that. Sounds like hell.  If it was the splines it would probably do it in any gear and especially if there was a load on it.

Thanks guys.
I have not looked at the drive shaft. I did grease the splines last time I put a rear tire on last year. prob 3k miles ago.
Guess I got a project. It’s to hot to ride around here for the next couple of months anyway....
Guess I will hope it drive shaft related and not transmission

I am not sure I understand the jerk you mention. You might have experienced the infamous 1/4 -1/2 second ignition failure that is felt as a jerk in the drive line. Mine does that about once a year and is no big deal......a common occurrence in the I/S

It could very well be Ignition failure. I had not thought of that. it was not under any load. Just crusing down the road at the same speed. That is the first time I have heard there was a common thing like that. Thanks for the tip. I will check the splines and shaft anyway... It is probably overdue...

... That is the first time I have heard there was a common thing like that.

"Common" is probably an overly exuberant use of the modifier, but it has happened to many of us.

It won't hurt to inspect your drive line.  You probably should anyway.  My bet, though, is on the ignition hiccup.

If what you experienced was the Ignition module brain fart which feels like a sudden, momentary lose of power, your driveline is probably ok, but if it hasn't been checke3d in a while, it won't hurt to service it.  You originally stated you problem as a clunk and "It feels almost like it slipped a tooth on the drive shaft or something."  If the later is true, DEFINATELY check your driveline.  Most of the driveline failures reported are usually leaving the rider stranded on the side of the road.  You certainly don't want that.

If it is the ignition fart, there is some thought that tightening/checking the electrical connections such as battery cables, ground connections might have a positive effect.  Its a bit hard to tell, mine has happened 4 times in four years and 164K miles.....my battery cables were a bit loose this last time, so after tightening them and the problem doesn't occur again for two years.......was that the fix...... crazy2 crazy2 crazy2 crazy2

It is good advice to check the drive shaft/pinion cup if you have not done so before and just make that a part of the spline lube interval.

I have the same thing happen, when I don't shift hard enough into gear. I either shift again, or down then up shift firmly, to insure it's in gear.
