I,ve got a 97 [red and white].97,700 miles . Have been doing maintenance[some long over due] Adjusted the valves ,synched the carbs.[they were way out] Began to adjust the pilot screws. I bought the tool from pro motion. Did the initial setting [2turns out] on #5 & 3. Attemted to do #1 uhho the screw was TIGHT wouldn't turn in or out. I,ve pulled the intake tube off and still can't turn the screw. I stopped and am now asking for HELP. I'm afraid to try 2, 4,& 6. Whad I do wrong? Thanks in advance.

No help here - sorry. For what it's worth, My 97 is exactly the same. #1 is godawful tight and I chipped the casting trying to loosen it. you chose a better solution - to quit while you were ahead.

Well, I calmed down and went to the archives. It looks like the only thing to do is Dremel tool a slot in the pilot screw with it still in the carb. Gotta go find my Dremel. That screw better turn with a regular driver.

Spray some penetrating oil in there and wait a day. Try again. Maybe some heat and then cold will break it loose. When you get it out, use some "Never-Sieze" on the threads when reinstalling. The best penetrating oil is a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone. Make it yourself.

The motion pro tool is a very good tool, but you can't get enough leverage if you have a siezed pilot. Take the bit out of the tool, insert it in the carb and try turning it with a wrench, a socket wrench or something like this, from Sears or Harbor Freight. I've also, on occasion, used a butane torch, with discretion.

If ya break out the torch, just remember that there is gasoline and rubber gaskets inside that carb. One such tiny gasket at the tip of the pilot screw...JTL 1

There was one fella here[I think either John or Tom] that couldn't get one to move no matter what he did.. But,, try the others just to see how many you have that are 'stuck'.. You can probably get the dremel tool on one or two without removing the bank,,but,, if more than that are 'stuck' then it just may be easier to remove everything so they can be turned upside down.. I think its a whole lot easier to straight cut/slot the heads for a normal screwdriver and add a bit of never-seize to them,, it'll sure make things easier the next time..

I got the carbs synched then tried pilot adjusting. #1,2,4,6 are stuck. I'll take Patrick's advice and remove the carb bank to remove them. OK so now that I've got the vacuum leaks stopped[I think] -factory vacuum caps replaced -desmogged -2 intake tubes from airbox not seated correctly on the carbs[from the factory? I've never had the airbox off before] Now with it synched and no pilot screws adjusted. Now it "burbles". Runs like its ready to go to reserve. At all rpms. I pulled each plug wire-thought it was missing-wasn't. Checked plugs [new nkgs] they're firing. This started after synching. I don't know. HELP?

If you are going to go as far as to remove the carbs, I would open up the bowls and clean them out. Spay some gumout in the pilot holes and blow them out with compressed air. Maybe even consider replacing the slow jets while your in there. Any time you put anything threaded into aluminum anti seize is your friend

Thanks Sharky. I planned on doing that but not right now. What I had planned was to go to the Grand Canyon with a group of friends on the 8th of June. I gotta find out what's wrong and fix it or face SWMBO and tell her we can't go on the bike. That scares me.
