I am in need of some steel brackets to hold up a quartz bar top (12 in overhang). I want to use something that is not seen (so no L brackets or corbels) and am planning on something like 15" steel bar (2" wide) with holes drilled and countersunk so I can screw it in to channels routed into the 2x6 top of the knee wall. There are a couple companies that offer them pre-made on line but I don't want to pay $50 apiece for them.

Is there anyone on here that has a machine shop that could cut 1/8 or 3/16" steel, drill and countersink 4 holes on one end and ship them out? I would be happy to pay for your time and effort over and above the cost of materials. I will need 4 bars total.

Or do you know of any small shops or guys who are in the Chicagoland area that can do this?

Thanks in advance

If I'm visualizing this correctly, you would have a far stronger support if 2x1 rectangular tubing were used instead of flat bar.  Although this might be overkill, better still would be to have a piece of 1/8 x 2 flat bar welded to the near end of the tubing, extending down so it can be fastened to the wall stud, preventing the near end of the tubing from moving up when you push down on the far (cantilevered) end.  Here's my attempt to illustrate:

  __________________________

 ||-----------------------------'

 ||                |
 -|                |
  |                |
  |                |

The knee wall stud could be trimmed back so the vertical flat bar sits flush behind your finished surface.

These guys might be able to help once you've finalized a design.

BIG THANKS to "Da Prez" who not only called me a day after I posted this string, but who also fabricated the items I was looking for in less than a week.    Grin Grin Grin

For what he charged me for the materials and his time to make the four mounting brackets I needed, I could not buy ONE online. Saved me over $150!  cooldude cooldude cooldude

Thanks again...I will be buying you a cold one (iced tea) down in Inzane.
