Does anyone run a car tire part time?  Once a year I travel to Louisiana to visit friends (about 4000 miles round trip) on Interstate 10 and I've been toying with running a CT rather than burning through half the life of my rear Avon.  I don't want to run a CT all the time as I've ridden both and prefer the handling of the mc tire in the twisties (just a personal preference, not looking to ignite controversey).

If I do this, I'll get ahold of another wheel to mount the CT on so that I can swap back and forth easily.
My main questions are:

1.  Is anyone else doing this?

2.  If so, what is the best way to store the wheel/ct for the other 11 months of the year? (Laying on it's side, standing on the tread, suspended, covered, etc..?

3.  Is this a viable idea or am I just overcomplicating my life?

I've got two rear wheels just for that purpose. I prefer the car tire, but several track day places won't let me run the Valkyrie with a car tire on it. So, you're not the only one.

For me To swap tires depending on what I am riding on is time wasted. If I am happy with a tire to run all the time, I will run that tire all the time. Then again I run CT all the time. Kinda like my truck. I do most driving on the roads but I have off road tires on it for when I work in the fields, mud, or in snow. I dont swap those.
Ive done many trips with a mc tire. Sure the tire wears faster then a ct but that is gonna happen. I always expected to change the mc tire every year anyway. Who knows what your gonna ride into when you get off the hiway to your destination.

Like I said, this is me. Your time might be more availible then mine.

How long does it take to remove the wheel, have the old tire removed, a new one mounted, and the new one re-installed?  Shocked
It's MUCH faster to have a spare mounted on a spare wheel to install immediately.
You can have the old one replaced at your leisure.
MUCH more tome efficient to have a spare wheel, Fudgester.  uglystupid2
With all the time you save doing this, you can take your bike out of the trailer and wash it a couple times!  cooldude

When I first went darkside, I briefly considered the 2 tire system.

I'm not a GP racer and I don't have a tire sponser, so any little advantage I might get on hard twisties is not worth it to me.

We have some excellent winding roads in Louisiana and I'm comfortable going from peg scrape one way to peg scrape the other direction on my sure-footed car tire.  (It's actually fun to educate some of these riders that know "in their mind" that a car tire won't work on twisties.)

I commute on the interstate from Baton Rouge to New Orleans several times a week and then go play on the backroads every weekend.  It just wouldn't be worth my time swaping back and forth.  I'd go through way too many motorcycle tires for it to be practical, so I'll stick to the dark side for my one and only tire.

Sounds like a very pratical solution to me.

After use clean the grease off the CT wheel and regrease well. Maybe find some plastic covers to fit over each side to keep moisture and bugs etc out.

Lay wheel on it's side on a piece of plywood with an old towel folded up so the disc has something relatively soft to lie on

I've actually thought of this in the past but never came up with a spare rim cheap enough to grab it for this purpose yet.  cooldude

Dont need a spare rim with the CT on it.  Cheesy 30k on this tire and its not half wore yet.
Maybe you should bring a spare front rim out to Sturgis with you this year!  Grin
I cant get it out of the trailer if I can not get my bike alarm to shut off!  Wink  2funny

Fudgie,

I hope you like others are taking care of spline maintenance on a regular basis when using a car tire.
