I am having some minor surgery in the morning and will be off work until next Thursday.  I figured this would be a good time time get more familiar with the new Valk.  I have ordered intake o-rings, rear end o-rings, and an electric fuel shut off.  I will not be doing any heavy lifting for a few days, so I figured I would get my wife to help put it on the jack tonight.  Then I can go ahead and pull the bags and rear wheel so I can do the work without have to wrestle with much.  Anything else that I should tinker with while I'm down?  It has to be up and running by Wednesday, it's my only transportation, so the time for ordering parts has just about passed.  Oil has just been changed by me, brake and clutch fluids look good.

How many miles are on your Valk?  You may want to consider pulling the final drive, drive shaft and u joint while you have the rear wheel off.  Then you can clean, regrease and reassemble them.  Check your shock bushings and replace if necessary.  You're doing this at just the right time.  HDL's 4th of July sale started yesterday so you can order parts if you need them.

Pulling the wheel requires some heavy lifting. Be careful not to hurt yourself.

just shy of 53,000 on the bike.  It looks to be in good mechanical condition, guy said he changed the oil every 2k with Honda oil and filters.  I just figured with all of the horror stories about the final drive, I needed to get in there and check it myself.  It has an almost new set of Avons on it, but no idea if it was all lubed when apart.  I did notice a few spots where accessories had been removed prior to the sale (center stand, hiway pegs, etc) then saw then pop up on Craigslist.  Makes me a little wary if what I was told was BS or not.

I didn't get the wheel pulled last night, but I did get it up on the jack.  So that part may be waiting a couple of days longer.  I figured I could lift a wrench, just not a rear end.  I might be able to work it out with the jack, but will probably just wait until I am 100% for that part.  I can't risk delaying my recovery, I have to be able to ride again by Thursday in order to get back to work.

ps.  Vasectomies are no fun at all.

The rear wheel weighs more than the final drive.

This is what I found.  The grease in there looked all black and sticky, like regular grease.  Do I need to start looking for new parts soon?  Notice the "lands" worn into the splines.

To me that looks exactly like what putting a rear end together NOT in the right way does to splines.  That is some wear, not horrible however, if you put it back together right those splines should serve you well for quite some time.  Make sre you remove the final drive....check the pinion cup and drive shaft splines, clean and lighlty grese those as well and then put it together properly.  I made a slide show (its in shoptalk under tech tips......chrisj's rear end mx) check it out....do it right and forget about it for at least 10K miles

Thanks for the info.  I got it all back together, but haven't started tightening everything up yet.  I printed off your slides before I started the whole thing and they helped out a bunch.  I'm originally from a little east of you (Bonifay, FL) and might look you up next time I'm down that way.  Maybe get you to show me some things about final drive maintenance.  The internet is great, but nothing beats hands-on experience with a pro.  If that's ok with you, of course.

Yes, Chris knows his stuff!!  In fact I'm taking a friend to his place at 8AM in the morning.  My friiend is leaving of a 1500+mile trip with his wife this Monday. His '98 Valk., which he has owned for about 2 years, has 60K on it and has never done or had the rear-end serviced.  We're hoping this will be only preventative service.
