Let's imagine that you are stuck in a sealed room with a big red button on the wall. A voice tells you that in a few minutes a chime will sound, and that from that point, you have to press the red button within 20 seconds of one hour or else the room will explode! What's more is that if you survive, you get a brand new Valkyre (still in it's shipping crate) and life's supply of bacon! You have at your disposal nothing but a knife, a lighter, a 50-minute fuse, and a 70-minute fuse (you can imagine the fuses as pieces of rope that burn slowly but very accurately). The catch, though, is that the fuses are of a non-uniform thickness. What this means is that if you had a 40-minute fuse, you couldn't just simply cut it into four 10-minute fuses of equal length. And no, you can't accurately unravel or cut the fuses lengthwise either! The big question is: How can you use what's available to tell when almost exactly one hour has passed? Would you survive? Would you bring home the bacon on that Valkyrie? Think about it.

Light the 70 minute fuse on both ends = 35 minutes when the sparks meet, then light the 50 minute fuse at both ends = 25 minutes when the sparks meet... 25 + 35 = 60 minutes. Watcha think?

I'm thinking that in a sealed room, I'd die of smoke inhalation from the fuses burning way before the hour is up.

Well, that's one way, but, I'm thinking that 20 second window might make it interesting lighting the second fuse. Maybe, maybe not but, yer using yer nogg'n, that's for sure. Personally, I'd light the end of both fuses and place the other ends together, when the sparks meet, it's exactly 60 minutes and I'm pushing the button. Regardless, I'm tak''n the bacon.
