I came across a rider the other day who rode a Valk Trike that said when he rides he only uses 1-3-5 gears because 2 & 4 are just a waste of time. He would double click when he shifted. Ever heard of anyone practicing such a thing ??

I'm guessing he prolly got a little better gas mileage.

Can't see the (if any) gas savings being worth the effort.
I'll admit skipping/jumping gears in my Dodge Cummins diesel/manual when I'm running without a load but, with a load, that ain't gonna happen.

Do that in the truck most of the time. Supposed to save on fuel.

There are times when I shift 1-2-3 and then if I know I'm not going to be going much faster than that on the road I'm on... I'll double shift right to 5th and cruise from there at around 45 and up keeping the RPMs at 2000-2500.  Is there something wrong with that?

I frequently do the same McDragon. As far gas savings by skipping gears, I seriously doubt that there is much, if any. My 2c.  Roll Eyes

Nothing wrong or weird about that practice. I do it quite often if traffic allows me to wind up the rpm's enough in first. I'll then go directly to 3rd, but do it only if the traffic is moving in such a way I can keep the rpm in the same general range. Then, again if the traffic is such that it can be done effectively I'll jump to 5th on the next shift. If the engine speed is up you're not lugging it nor are you over revving. I don't do it for any fuel conservation, just something I do. Basically, if the situation you're in doesn't call for using each gear, why bother with the extra shifting. Now if I happen to be in a situation that calls for a good twist of the wrist...different story. I'll use every gear in there and wish for one more at the end.

So, tell your friend there's nothing weird or unusual about his shift pattern. It won't hurt the engine or driveline, I've been doing it longer than many have been breathing and have yet to experience engine failure or driveline disaster.  Wink

I also frequently skip 2nd and 4th, especially when I want to put my feet up on the forward pegs to kick back and relax.

I frequently use the 1-3-5 shift pattern and sometimes a 1-2-5 or some variation if I am not in any hurry or no traffic is around. No reason other than it's very easy to do & it saves a teeny bit of wear & tear on the clutch & transmission. The F6 engine is a wonderful torquey beast!  cooldude

Skip shifting is a "feature" on GM 6-speed transmissions.  It is annoying, but the idea is that it is a fuel saver.  The way it works on the GM is 1-4.  If you ease off the line, and tach it up to a certain range, the computer will lock out 2nd gear, so that when you clutch and shift back from first, it forces you into 4th.  I don't see it as a fuel saver, b/c I wind up gassing it to get the revs back up.  And yes, I do skip a gear or two on the valk from time to time.

Only if you are a purist! Heck, the Fat Lady has enough torque to shift from 1st to 5th, though I agree with Jabba, it would make me feel a bit weird as well (although I would defend your right to do so!!!)  2funny crazy2

BMW auto did a study/test over 20 yrs ago proving that the sooner the car gets into high gear the better mpg. this required higher rpms in lower gears to get to intended cruising speed faster and then being in the high gear.
I do on occasion skip gears depending on the low gear acceleration I did and the cruise speed I want.
skipping gears will reduce clutch wear.

Ive been doing the 1,3,5 in almost all my vehicles for years.
Or in 6 speed cars 1,3,6
2 and 4 are a wasted gears.
Heck my Camaro wont let me shift into 2nd............unless your flooring the gas.
