She won't start this morning, just a bunch of clicks.  Sorry I am not much of a wrench.  Starter?  What does it take to swap out a starter on a bike?  Is this something for a shop ?($$$?)

First thing I'd suspect is the battery.

Would not start to change things out unless you change the battery first off.

Denial can be expensive!

+1

If you can start the bike by jumping it from a non-running car, it's most likely the battery.

yup, check the battery, most likely too old, bad cell or low on fluid.

In order of probability:

Battery (needs to be replaced)
Start Switch (needs to be disassembled and cleaned)
Start Relay Connector (needs to be inspected and pins cleaned)
Start Relay (needs to be replaced)

Very few starter failures ever reported

What do you mean by the starter not engaging ?? What did it sound like ?? Was the starter motor turning/spinning ??

On a charger in Jumpstart mode, doesn't start.  When I press the start button, the starter making clucking noises, doesn't that mean the switch and relay are good?   Is there a service manual online?   I regret to inform you I have no idea how to take the side cover off

I can push start it (whew) and it runs fine.  Actually I rode 45 min from home, and when I stopped, I shut the bike off, but then needed to restart to move it off some gravel.  That's when I noticed the starter makes noise, but wont start.  I push started to get home, and posted my question here

Not enough information yet, really.

To pinpoint the source of the clicking is the main thing.

Generalities don't normally lead to specific cures.

I should have said nothing at all was happening. But as soon as I bumped it by rolling the bike in gear, then hit the starter, it started right up.

Dead spot in the starter indicates damage from a hydrolock.  It sounds as if you've broken teeth off of a gear in the path from starter to engine.  If so, it will do one of three things, depending on how the teeth broke, and where on that gear you are:
1) start fine
2) freewheel, but not even hint at starting the engine.
3) Make a horrendous clattering noise as broken teeth touch, but don't truly engage.

You have a big repair ahead of you.  Search for hydrolock repair, and if you don't find what you want,  I recommend starting a new thread.

Mark

[edit]
I just re-read this thread.  If nothing at all was happening (no noises of any type), then it isn't any of my above options.  You might have a problem with your safety switches (clutch/sidestand).  When you rolled it forward, it cleared some gum in the switch, or something along those lines.

Where are you?  Perhaps someone more experienced can take a look at it.

I am in New York, but I am determined to get to the bottom of this on my own...Rite of Passage-type thing.   cooldude

The hydrolock question happening in parallel had me freaked out till I read carefully

Is the starter relay fused, and if that is fuse is burnt, would I hear clicking or nothing?  Not sure if the fuse is on the control loop, or the high voltage side.

Very nice weather in New York...trying not to truncate our short riding season   Cool

Simply "bumping" the bike when in gear, does absolutely nothing with the starter motor.

Thinking automotive when dealing with the Valkyrie is folly.

First things first.

Check battery and all cable connections. Sounds like a loose or dirty connection maybe your problem. If you can push start it no hydro. If stsrter is spinning and not turning motor over could be damage to the starter gear. did you try jumping from an auto battery (non -running). I've not had very good luck with the jumpbox systems.

If it's a broken idler gear, it will rotate the gear and allow the starter to grab.  If he actuated the clutch or the sidestand, it could have unstuck a switch.

I agree that if you can push start it, it's not currently hydrolocked.  However, if it locked, had damage, and then cleared the lock, he could still have the damage but could push start it.
There are two damaged bikes in one thread.  This is getting confusing.  I'm not seeing quite enough information on either one to diagnose.

This is on the click, click, click bike.If it were me I'ld make sure the bike is not in gear and turn the key on and jump accross the solenoid posts and see if the starter works. If it works might be a bad starter soleniod. I'm still betting on bad battery or dirty/ loose connections.

I wouldn't bet against you on that one.
