Last Friday we had a big storm roll through with 91 MPH winds and knock down trees and power lines.  They were calling it a "land Hurricane". We just got our power back last night at 8PM.

No power coupled with high temps and humidity made for lousy sleeping conditions. Fortunately we had a generator that helped. Didn't loose any food and we had fans to move air around.

Spent the entire day Saturday cleaning up my back yard of all the limbs that came off of my tree. It was quite a few. The neighbors spruce tree lost its top 10 feet and ended up in my front yard. Oh well I am back now. Feels good to be in the A/C again...ahhhhhhhhh........

You all have a great 4th........

"Land hurricane" and "straight line winds" are not nearly sexy enough terms.  The media is now calling it a "super derecho", derecho being spanish for straight.

Glad you got your power back - that would suck not having power in the record high temps that everyone is seeing.

Glad ya have power back Mark. That was some kind of storm....it rolled across the east US and out to sea at Wilmington, NC according to news reports. Lots of people in Ohio and WV and some other states still withour power. Also a few deaths directly related to the heat.

We had one hell of a thunder storm last night in Pittsburgh.   I'm staying at my mothers with a house full of out of towners.  I' ve been enjoying sleeping on an air mattress on her large side porch like I used to as a kid.  I got to enjoy nature's fireworks last night with a nervous golden retriever.  No damage and certainly not as inconvienent as what you went thorugh.

I went to the garage after our 1st storm to make sure my diesel generator would start.   It started okay, but didn't generate any electricity.

I'd rebuild the generator last winter and one of my old trade secrets failed.   String was too heavy so the brushes no hit the armature.   Works now however, so let momma nature get pissed off, I think I'm covered.   No trees in my yard to fall on the house, and non of my neighbors have any trees close enough to do any damage if they come down.

I sat in on our city's mayor and staff emergency meetings. No loss of life but many, many, downed power lines and trees. There was some structural damage mainly to warehouses
. I was the co-ordinator for our street of apartments for senior citizens.  It wasn't easy on the seniors, including me.  95 plus temps, high humidity, and no power.  We managed to help each other and learned a lot about our neighbors in the process.

One thing  that I learned is that, after the second or third day, NOTHING short of a full time generator will keep food from spoiling in a freezer or refrigerator.  Neither will hold cold for 24 hours in 95 degree heat..

As I post this, there are still some in New Haven without power. temp tomorrow, supposed to be 102 plus heat index.

The family shared our 5500 watt Centurion generator and it was a big help for Mark (Mad6Gun) to be able to sleep plus all the family stored their meat in his freezer and the Centurion kept up with the whole shebang.
