Always replace the drive shaft and pinion cup as a pair.

That's the nut for the axle I think.

They've got that wrong in the picture because the axle actually goes in from the pumpkin side.

You will not find the axle nut in the rear wheel break-out, even though the axle is shown.

It looks like the axle nut, shown in the wrong place.  Honda's parts drawings show the Valkyrie's rear axle backwards.

The main reason I would think for the nut to be on the brake side is because the threads are right handed threads.

If the wheel bearings ever freeze up (to the axle) the axle could start to rotate and the turning would tend to loosen the assembly as opposed to tightening the same.
