I have developed a big gas leak all of a sudden on the left carb bank.  Dropping on top of the block, the middle carb is soaking wet and so are the overflow lines, like it is coming from above.  Top of the carb and the part of the hose I can see that attaches there is dry.  Sound like that carb's supply line?

Seems to me that you need to do a more thorough investigation.

That is of course, if you prefer to keep riding.

And not burning.

I do....just found it when I started it up and 30 seconds later I had a 3 foot around puddle of gas on the floor.  Just did a look-see with a flashlight and posted the above.  A more thorough investigation will be made later this evening when it cools off some.   cooldude

Sounds like the leak starts when the vacuum opens up the petcock. If you turn the petcock to "off" and then start and run on just fuel in the carbs, might help you get a start point.  Better yet, use a mighty-vac and put vacuum on the petcock without running it with the petcock set to on. A 3 foot pool of gas around you is not the place for a hot engine. Any spark or a water heater pilot light could light you and the Valk up in a big hurry.

Yep. Mighty-vac is way safer and it's easier to troubleshoot when your hair's not all stood up while you wait on that special sound gas makes when it ignites.

Sounds like a float is sticking....

Fire, naturally should be the first concern.

Second is the possibility of a hydrolock!

All else falls by the wayside.

Check if it is dripping from the weep-hole on the petcock... when my buddy Gary
got his Valk, the petcock leaked like crazy all over the motor, even though the
PO had an ingenious idear about how to fix it... if your's is like his, a rebuild
will take care of it...

There is a large line from each side of the carb bank and sticks into a couple of holes in the rear chrome crossmember of the carb bank.  If it is coming out of one of those, a float is probably stuck on the side that it is leaking.  You might get it to release by tapping each carb on the affected side with the plastic side of a large screwdriver.

If this is an Interstate tank, your leak  could be coming from the fuel level sender o-ring.
Happened to me, I over tightened the four nuts that hold that unit in place against the tank. It started leaking. Repairing this is a big PIA! (welding new bolts to the tank (welding gas tanks is scary Sad)).

My 2 cents is check the o-rings in the carb rack.  The fuel line connects from the gas tank and then splits to each carb bank.  Each of the carbs in the banks connects to the other one with small tubes with o-rings at each end of the tube.  If these o-rings give out, you will leak fuel.  I'm in the middle of sorting out old fuel problems and have to take my carbs apart a few times now and suspect that this is the source of your issue.  Good luck

I had a leaking o-ring in the fuel rack on the left carb bank.
If its there take detailed photos and notes.
Ended up costing me a set of take off carbs for a stinking o-ring.
I got so annoyed taking the carbs apart where the 2 are joined together at the fuel rail.
I just ended up smashing them..........First time anger ever got me working on a bike.

Was also the 1st task I did on the bike after I bought it.....non running of course.
Got me an OEM manual a Clymers and found out about this board too. Right afterwards.

Ok...here's an update...went out and tapped best I could on the middle carb and the end of the #6 carb with a screwdriver handle...turned around and there was my flashlight, so shined it on the middle carb and lo and behold, the hose was off the bottom right side of it.  Slid it back on, started it up and no leaks.  Still curious, because I was thinking that was the drain hose and if it is, still means I had a stuck float and the tapping got it unstuck.  Am I correct?

More than likely you are correct.

Might never happen again.

Regarding that hose: Go ahead and open the drain on that carburetor to let some fuel out. if the hose is connected it will go to a 6-tube union and drain on the ground from a single hose.

Draining that carburetor a little may expunge the crap that may have been jamming the float valve assembly.

Not a bad thing to do with every carburetor every once in a while. For preventive reasons.

Not to confuse the issue but - if fuel was coming out of the drain hose connection then the bowl drain screw must have been not screwed in. Putting the hose back on would create a puddle below the bike in front of the back tire.

Don't know...all I know is I did the tapping and put the hose on and no more leaking...although that did cross my mind last night...if it was a stuck float, where else could it come from? - and it only did that while the bike was running and petcock was turned to ON....

I think this has already been mentioned, but I would guess it is an o-ring on one of the gas transfer tubes between the carbs. When I bought my bike, it was leaking badly on both sides. A lot of gas was being dumped on the rubber tubes coming off of the reed valve assemblies, but only when it was running. I was sure that I was going to have to pull the carbs to fix it. After the 500 mile trip home on the trailer, it has never leaked again. I am constantly watching for it to start again, but how do you fix something when it is not happening?

Maybe when you put the drain hose back on, you reseated something?

Just keep ypour eye on it.

Naw, you were correct the first time BD.

Just a stuck float.

Don't worry about it.
