I got my oil changed today and in walks a gent of considerable age. he was 98 years young.
of course I asked what his secret was, I think it took him aback a little.

he said he smoked until he was eighty, eats junk food alot, and never sees a doctor, only as a last resort.

so know you know, carry on   Grin

Probably worked hard all his life too. My Dad is in his late 70's, was a Tool and Die maker until his mid 60's and he too is still strong as a bull.

he said he was a diver, I'll bet he swam a bunch too. good work out, swimming.

alot of older folks are much tougher then they look. my great uncle could walk up and down the hills in Virginia alot faster then I could as a teen. he was pushing 70 then!

I live in Houston and had an 92 yr old uncle in Dallas about 5 yrs ago.   I asked him over the phone what did he think was responsible for his long life.    The question surprised him I think and he told me he would have to think on that and he would call me back.  About 30 minutes later he called me back and said "You know, every morning I fix my breakfast of 2 eggs, white toast, and a jalepeno pepper.   I think that is what has made me live this long."

wasn't what I was expecting......but that was his thoughts as to why he had lived so long.

My Dad lived to only 70 years.  I'm living a little longer.  All that I can say is whatever you've done to your body will come back to haunt you , sometimes earlier, sometimes later.

What works for some, doesn't work for others.

No secret to that.

Most of the men in my Dad's family died before 60, as did my Dad. Out of the three of us boys, one of us passed at 44, my other brother made it into his 60's and I'm 55. My Mom's side of the family are mostly long lived people though as was my Mom. I guess time will tell with me.

I, at one time, liked 'Yesterday' by Roy Clark.  However, it seems that his song is full of regrets.

I have my regrets but I can't dwell on them. Things I could've, would've, should've changed. would only lead to depression, an enemy in my aging years.

Instead, I chose to think in the present. I exercise and keep my brain active. I try to associate myself with persons who have a positive attitude  and laugh a lot.(like the VRCC).  Some of the bad habits in the past I have shed with no regrets.  I did not inherit perfect genes, far from it, but I try to overcome my 'defective' parts.

Seniors who are coach potatoes,  drink in excess, and smoke might live to an old age and brag about bad habits contributing to their longevity but that's just the luck of the draw. I prefer  to help my chances.  Above all, a positive attitude seems to be for me(well, most of the time Wink)

A FACT that was demonstrated for me this past week was a 'can do' attitude.  Seniors on my street held up well despite no ac in 95 degree heat. We were helping each other.  It was an amazing thing for me. Don't ever sell my generation short!

Willow can correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the poet Frost said it well.  "I have miles to go before I sleep"

I hope that I can go a few more, both riding and otherwise.

In my business I sold to mostly older people...it always made me wonder how they got to their age...one 70 year old would be decripped and the next full of  life...one strong the other weak, one quick witted the next misty...never did figure it out with the exception that the harder physically one worked the better off in age they were...I still play the game with voices...some sound old and are young and the next opposite...When I was young I thought of older people as having one foot in the grave...I know many, and one or two tougher than I, 20 years or more older than I...my only thought are to work hard, hang out in the gym and never give up!!!

I saw one of my customers at work yesterday. He turned 98 on thursday, and of all things was out PUSH mowing his yard in the 100+ degree heat.  I asked if he was crazy, he said "No, I didn't get where I am today by worrying about how I'm going to feel tomorrow."

they were tougher back in the day, we owned a trailer park when I was a kid. 5+ acres of grass, I found out one of the guys that lived there since before we bought it used to mow ALL 5 acres with a push (blade type) mower

Mom Died at 58.  Dad at 61.  Both had issues.  Mom was an uncontrolled diabetic, and dad drank him self to death.

I am trying hard to stay in shape.

Work hard.  Don't worry about how you're gonna feel tomorrow... that's pretty much my MO.

Very well written Sir. Especially the part about depression. Very easy to look back and wish we had done things differently. The important thing is to live today and look forward to tomorrow.
