I have sold a few bikes...and a few for friends...only had one who would not allow a test ride...and I know people who would not let you ride their bike if you were walking and they had three...for me I gauge the person and go from there...maybe after reading this I would go for a ride along side them...

A deposit of the price of the motorcycle plus X 3 price of bike. $10000.00 asking price=$40000.00 deposit. Any type of damage=keep all da loot. Now mind you it's"just"a suggestion. The nicest and kindest and most considerate person in the world may turn out to be a WORLD class f***up when it comes to mechanical things. Just something to ponder BEFORE mayhem and all his relatives show up on yer doorstep. RIDE SAFE.

I've been lucky. Never had anyone test ride that didn't buy. I figure that when it get's to the test ride, they're really serious. Guess not with all people. If you advertise no test rides or no test rides without deposit, you'll scare off a good portion of potential buyers. Personally, if I detect a bad attitude on the part of the seller, I'll pass the ad by. I'd rather not deal with a butthole no matter what the circumstances.

I have 98,000 on my 98 Valk. I have hit the rev limiter more than a couple of times. The person in the cl add does not give a year of the bike but at 11,000 miles it may just have been a defective head or head gasket or improperly torqued from the factory. It could also be that some one used the wrong antifreeze and took out the water pump and or the bike had over heated at some point in its life. I have seen some people warm there bikes excessively. It could also be the luck of the draw. I had a 84 1200 wing that the day after I decided to sell it, it decided to eat the 3rd stater. I think it was mad at me.

Last bike I sold I did a ride along on the Valk, he rode my vulcan. We went for a short ride, came back home and he handed me the asking price in cash, with no haggling and rode off into the sunset.
I do actually worry when two people show up in a car, and one wants a test ride (car or bike). I will always go along or behind to preclude someone driving off with one of my rigs.

Hey Dave...
On 123 right near the Ga/SC border, there's an old bridge that used to go over the Tugaloo river. Now the lake is there. They left the bridge and its approach for fishermen to use...

Plus me on this. I don`t think you can blow a H/G on a test drive. That`s what rev limiter`s are far. BUT, crap happens !

If the buyer is serious, he/she showed up with the money to buy. Full asking price deposit for the test ride. This way, you're covered. If they are not willing to give you the cash before the test ride, they are not confident in their riding ability and should not be on your bike, or they didn't show up with the cash, so they're not buying anyway.
It's not a question of trust. Anything can happen. They can mess up putting the kickstand down when they get off and there goes your driving light, mirror, and saddlebag. Then you're stuck because they won't buy a bike they have to first fix.

I'll take ya for a ride. That way you see how it works, that it works and I get it back. I've let folks ride and I've been with them. Valk with a full tank, Shadow with a gallon, me with a .45. Its too weird out there now kiddies. I've heard about them going to the hardware store and having a key made and coming back later. Urban myth perhaps. No desire to risk it. Too bad really.

I have no clue how to blow a head gasket on someone's bike out of spite. I don't think I would let any stranger test-ride my motorcycle or high-performance car. Give them a ride, maybe. Let him ride a buddy's Valkyrie to see if that's the bike he wants, not mine. I could see having a signed and paid-for deal with a "subject to test ride without damage to motorcycle" clause, where if the bike doesn't run as described money is returned and there is no more negotiating.

Pretty much what I do. I always put in my ad: test ride only with cash in hand and signed bill of sale. If you don't like it after the test ride, I'll give you your money back as long as there is no damage and not hot rodding.
