Hello, new to the forum.  Just picked up a 1997 Valkyrie with 55k miles and Jardine pipes.  Got a great deal on it.  Noticed there is a delay when I hit the throttle.  Is that normal?  I own a Vtx 1800c and Shadow 750 and they both have instant throttle responses.

Also, the lights flicker at idle and the tach does not light up (not sure if it's supposed to?).  Thanks in advance, and I'll work on getting a picture.

Welcome aboard!
I think you will find this forum a great support.

No, to the delay question.
Sounds like you need a good fuel system clean. Sea foam or Techron.

The electrical issues?

If you have the original alternator, it may not be up for the work.
Or you may just need a new battery. Try testing your battery voltage at 2000 rpm.
It should read 13+ volts (mine is 14+).

Good luck.

Great, thanks for your quick response, I'll give it a try and see how it works.  Fun bike and look forward to racking up the miles.   cooldude

what rpm is your idle?  May have to tweek it upwards a little.  The adjustment knob is on the right side of the carb bank...depending on year it is either black or grey.  The idle should be set at 900 rpm +/-100 rpm.

The tach bulb is easy to change....remove the single screw from the bottom center of the tach case and slide the case off to the rear.

The bulb is in a rubber boot.  Pull the boot carefully to remove the bulb.  You can buy replacement bulbs (12V, 1.7W) at any auto parts store, just take the bad bulb with you for comparison.  Installation is simply the reverse order.

Good luck...

800-1000 idle rpm, when hot.  A lot want their valk to sound like a two lunger at idle.  With 6 cyl, not possible, but they wind up with the idle set waaaayy too low.

Those aftermarket pipes could be a big part of the reason for the hesitation.

Trust me on this.

Jardines were a pain in the butt to get a good smooth idle out of them.

Went out to Andy & Justin's shop on a road trip.    Andy played with it, no luck and he can make any 6 banger run.

Ended up putting a set of their pipes on it and woke old MGM up quite a bit.

The Dyno they used in California said MGM had 106 hp and 99.8 Torque if memory serves me correctly.

Went to Paducha for InZane and a Yard Arm from New Mehico, challenged me to a HP test.    We run them, well mine anyway in the good heat of the day.   Like 96*, Brian's was run in a little less heat.    Here is a picture of the results.   His dyno, I couldn't make 100 HP and Brian couldn't hit 100 either.    So I had to concede to being skinned.

Well it's below the 500 line so I guess I gotta turn up the idle.  I noticed that if I try to do a smooth acceleration, it stops between 1 - 1.5 rpm for a brief moment and then will start to increase again.

Very well could be, I guess that what happens when you buy the bike used - you don't know what's been done to it (as far as the jets).  I'm taking it in soon to get all the fluids changed and a once over on the bike.  Not very mechanically inclined, so hopefully it all works out.  Put sea foam through it today and will continue to do it until I run out.

hope you have a good/honest shop to take it to.

many here have had big problems with a mech working on it that doesn't know valks.

That stumble at the transition rpm (upper range of the pilots and before main jets) can also be due to one or more plugged slow jets...let us know how you make out.
