I have a symtom raising a red flag.  When I pull the clutch lever, most of the time the lever will not pull in all the way.  It does pull in enough to work the clutch fine with absolutely no odd shifting troubles.  The partial pull started out only occasionally, now most of the time.  It is a 98 standard, 38000 miles

So.....I checked the bushing and the lever for abnormal wear and there was some so I replaced them.  No change to the oddity however.  I am wondering if I need to replace the piston set or perhaps the whole master assembly.

Any advice?

Thanks

The master cylinder rebuild kit is cheap to buy,....however with 38K, I'd suspect a lubrication issue. Remove the lever, check that the push rod and lever ferrule are properly lubed with a good quality grease and the screw that holds the lever to the m/c mount is not "overtightened" and make sure the acorn nut on the bottom of the screw is tight.

Good luck and keep us informed on the outcome.

I had put a new lever and bushing for lack of better words on.  both of the old were worn.  No improvement so it looks like I will install a master repair kit.  How involved is this procedure?

i would look at the clutch itself  i bet the rivets are gone and stopping the clutch from working
low miles ?? clutches have gone out this early over the years with this bike..but do a search on the clutch
i wouldn't take any long trips with it this way

Yep, rivets in the clutch plate.

Symptom is pretty determinative.

Sounds like rivets.   Mine went out about that mileage.  Not a bad job, if you have some mech skills.

Do a search in the tech pages and ask for help here if you need it.

I think I'm going to have to visit a dealer or this  situation.  I am working in a northern Chicago burb without a good place to perform teardown maintenance.  If anyone has a recommendation on a repair place please let me know.

I don't think its the oil or burnt plates.  The is no foul odors in the oil.  I am at 3200 miles on this oil, 15-50obile.  A service guy suggested I look at the interior of master cyl for a clogged hole where the fluid goes when pulling the clutch lever.  I would be lucky if that were the problem..

The rivets sounds like a good possibility, maybe the slave cyl also could be the problem.  I guess o will find out soon enough.  This has been a trouble free bike for the 6+ years I have owned it.  Only normal maintenance has been required, but I also want to rejet and change vacuum lines.
