1997 Valkyrie Standard - "Black Betty"

Alabama

« on: July 24, 2012, 06:53:38 PM »

My bike currently has a 21.5" clear and I'm about to burn up behind it in the hot Alabama sun. And even at 6'3" I can't look over it, only through it.

My question is how BIG of a pain is it to change the windshield on the I/S?
Can some of you guys give me some advice on the process? I didn't see anything on windshield in the Tech section.

Thanks in advance.

I have the C Baoley 2 inch shorter than stock.... Luv it.... it is wider and smoother and looks alot better IMAO.....

Its not to big a deal to change it..... just takes some time and care.... I did it a couple of years ago... took like 30 min... but you do have to take a bit of the fairing apart.... Have some JB weld or epoxy on hand if the inserts for the speaker panels strip out......

A shop manual is a great help if you have it....

You have to remove the speaker pods from the front fairing - there are 4 screws each (or should be).  Don't be surprised if one or more of the screws just turns and doesn't come out - the mold-in nut in the other half or the fairing is just spinning.  Gently work it out, and as has been said, have some epoxy type adhesive available to glue it back in.  You will need to unplug the speakers to set them safely out of the way - don't trust them to dangle.

Once you have the speaker pods out, there are 4 more of that same type screw that holds the chrome trim piece on.  2 on each side - sorry, don't have a pic of them at the moment.

Once the chrome trim piece is out, there are 4 bolts that go through the front of the shield into the fairing stay, and they hold the shield in place.  They will be easily identifiable when you're to that point.

Installation is reverse of disassembly, make sure you don't pinch the speaker wires in the housings, and put a dab of anti-seize on the threads of the small screws to help alleviate the nut stripping problems in the future.

Yup, 30 min job, be careful not to over tighten the speaker grill screws....

Brad,  Can you do me a favor, I also have a Cee Bailey shield on my I/S and I am trying to find out if it's stock height or 2" shorter. Mine measures 13.25" from the "TOP" of the black trim strip to the top of the shield in the center. (with the tape measure laying on the glass) Can you see if thats what you get?
Thanks,
Chuck

I put on a Cee Baileys +2 on 2 months ago. It has been great. Minimized the buffeting I was experiencing.

I had trouble with the 3 of the screws not wanting to come out. I worked them out slowly and gently using a putty knife between the fairing and speaker pod assembly. I did end up having to replace 1 screw and 1 bushing (the screw was not put in straight from the factory). I also used epoxy and antiseize on them. You may want to a have  some bushings and screws on hand as it delayed my putting it back together waiting for parts. It is ridiculous how much they get for those small parts.

I am not sure how long it took because of the stopping and starting. If all went smooth, I think it would easily be under an hour. I think total, it took me 5 days after waiting for parts and waiting for epoxy to dry before reassembly.

Also, I had a helper for a few minutes to hold the speakers when disconnecting and reconnecting the wires, which I would recommend.

FYI, my +2 is 17" from the top of the black strip.

That helps me out, that means mine must be the 2" shorter than stock. I like it, its great around town but on the highway it could be a little taller, (lots of turbulence over about 60-65 mph)...
Thanks

I have a switchblade setup on my 97 standard. I have a tall and a shortly and can easily switch between the two. I find I ride mostly with the tall. The wind buffeting with the shorty is just too much for me. Especially out on the Interstate.

Hey, just measured... mine is 14.5 inches from the black rubber to the top...

So I may be wrong on what I ordered...???? I thought the stock was 15 inches tall from the black... so maybe I just got the 1 inch shorter.... but i thought it was 2 inches shorter than stock... It is wider and I think it has a better rake and profile......... It seems alot shorter than stock to me.....

I can look over it with the stock IS seat, but my solo seat is lower so I really have to peak over it..... mostly look thru it

I did get it 2 years ago......
