Hi...I'm in the process of converting my Standard Valkyrie into an Interstate and ran into a couple of problems and hope that someone can point me in the right direction
Q-1..fitted a used wiring harness, dashboard, relays and new switchgear double checked out the wiring connections turn on the ignition and the coolant temp light won't go out, done all the checks and suspect a the Thermo switch??
Q-2..engine starts and run's no problem but when I shift into gear clutch in side stand up or down the engine cut's out....again tested side stand switch, neutral switch and diode, even dug into the wiring harness behind the battery to check the junction box where all the gremlins hide, found nothing ...suspect that a standard Ignition module won't work with an Interstate wiring harness can anyone please advise
                                Many thanks...Dave S.UK

The ignition modules are interchangeable. I've put my Standard one in an I/S to test the original. No difference. That's not your problem.

Dave
Is it possible that the 2 wires coming off the side stand switch got reversed??
I had installed a complete take off wire harness.
I know when I had mine apart.
I did some thing wrong had a similar problem and had reversed the 2 wires.
Switched them around and its been fine since, that was all I needed to do.
I think both wires on the standard harness any way are green??
1 might have a white or yellow stripe in it.
The other is solid green??

Dave, I don't know your year of bike but the following may be helpful:

There are two coolant temperature sender/switch circuit designs on our Valkyries and their wiring is different. Since you have changed wiring harnesses this could help to explain the mystery:

1997-1999 models have a thermosensor that connects to a module that converts the signal to turn on the temperature light. (This is the one that varies its resistance with temperature.)

2000+ models have a simple thermostatic switch that directly connects to the temperature light.

One more thing, on a standard and tourer the temp light comes on.
I thing on my IS it will not. Maybe there is still something that needs to be changed.
Start looking at the ckt that turns light at strt up.

Hi Again.....BonS sorted out the temp gauge  cooldude  my Standard Valk is a 99 and is fitted with the early thermo-switch ordered a new switch and while I'm in there ordered a new ECT sensor from H.D.L.
Now back to the engine cutting out...I connected a jumper wire and earthed out the the neutral wire behind the r/h front crash bar...engine will now run  without cutting out as expected  but should the side-stand kill the engine when in gear with the clutch in or out....mine won't and can't see how it should work.
For now I'm going too leave it connected while I order a new neutral switch not happy with the situation but the riding season is half way over and am in desperate need to get some miles in ha ha.....thanks everyone for your help it's appreciated

P.S.....how long does it take to change the neutral switch?....is it better done over winter?  8 cooldude

Neutral Switch Replacement.  You have to pull the front cover off of the engine (not my pics, but I kept them for just such an occasion)

Before tearing into the motor I would suggest to test the switch.

It is a simple grounding switch and very easy to test for function.

Most all problems occur with the side stand switch and equally so with the switch at the clutch lever.
