last year i bought a set of Avon tires.  put on 11,000 miles then this happened!!

in the third picture you can see the wear mark, should have been able to get another 1000 miles of that tire!!

i remember reading that this was a BIG issue with Avons, and thats why many riders would never buy 'em again!!  well, as a tire i loved 'em!  handled awsome, rode nice and smooth, didn't give me any problems until they got to the last mm's of tread.  the rear tire went flat on me one day after work and i didn't know until i rode it two miles to a station where i filled it up, put in 45#'s, then road it home (ten miles) kept an eye on it for two days.  air presure only dropped 3psi in those two days.  didn't like the thought of not being able to ride so i removed the tire from the cycle, saw the "Worph lumps" (star track character) and wrote an email to the company i bought it from, here's their reply;

Al,
Thanks for the photo's.
Our Returns Department is stating this should be covered by Avon's warranty so please
return this back to us for warranty processing.

Please complete your Merchandise Return Form (back of invoice) and enclose it with the
items you wish to return in a secure package. Copies of this information is also
attached.

For your convience we included a UPS Authorized Return Service Label (ARS Label) with
your order in a 6" x 9" envelope. Please follow the instructions on the
envelope on how to use this label.

Thanks,

Customer Service

now here's the problem......  i "CUT" the tire off the rear rim......  then cut it into 1/8ths to fit in the garbage can, and i don't think they're going to want it back!!  certainly not in the current condition!!  and not only that, WHO THE HECK KEEPS OLD RECIETS FOR MORE THEN A YEAR!!  i didn't think i was going to have that issue!!  i know i didnt keep the old paper work, i've got enough junk around the house!!  now my wife on the other hand has grocery reciets from three years ago!!  that's just stupid.......

well, anyway, keep an eye on your tires!!

I tried a set of Avons some years ago.. I don't think they had 1K miles on them when as riding at no more than 20 mph [good thing] I heard what I thought was a gun shot.. The front went flat.. It was split wide open from rim to rim.. I've never seen a failure like that before and I don't like having to call for a trailer.. Both tires were then thrown in the trash.. I've never really cared much for Avons,, now,, I really don't..

front tire looks great, wearing nice and even, nothing "odd" about it at all.  although, i have been watching it like crazy!!  i'd hate to have it blow out like you said yours did!!

oh, and i'm amazed that no one's said it yet; NO I'M NOT GOING TO A CAR TIRE!!  i've riden on a car tire a couple times, it's not my cup of tea.  i like to "roll" into my turns, don't like to have to "push" it into the turns.....  plus i never ride double so the weight issue isn't a factor.  just don't even try to type me into it....

Wow.  Was that a Venom or Cobra?  What was the tire born on date?

I have been using and liking Avon Venom or Cobras and didn't know about this issue til now.  I have heard other tires having various problems, but not these.  I guess they all have issues at some point or another.

As far as cutting it off the rim, that might not be an issue but those pieces could be.  I'd send it back to em in pieces since they are sending you the shipping label anyhow, and explain your reason for cutting.....

I highly doubt you would've gotten much back anyways with 11K and close to the wear bars with my best guess 14-15K miles on a rear tire at most.  That being said, it should never separate and bubble like that especially in 1 - 1 1/2 years of driving.

My Avon experience has been very good. I love them. I seem to get more miles out of mine than most people. My rear Cobra now has 16K on it and has many miles left. I own a compressor and never let it fall below 40 PSI. I run 46 when I check it. Front has 42 PSI.

Why not try a car tar? Really, though, I had one set of Avons....didn't really
like them very much. Better than Dunlops but didn't stick as good as Metz.
Threw them away(can't remember miles) and went back to a Metz front, Darkside
rear. Thinking about trying a 200 Metz rear IF my car tar ever wears out.

11000 on a rear is not THAT terrible

for a motorcycle tire, main thing is you check the tires and were not hurt !

If I get 11000 out of my battleaxe 200 I will be very surprised as the posts I read said anywhere from 6000 to 10000 and I am at 8000 now with a somewhat flattened area across about 4" of the center of the tire  lots of deep tread left  run 42-43 in the tire

Staple or tack a priority mail envelope to the wall of your garage and put receipts for the bike in it

Just dont staple it too high so you can reach it   2funny

Obviously not that old a tire.  I would still send it back to em.  It did look as tho it was coming to the end of it's useful life anyhow.  I did have a rear Avon blow out riding 2 up at about 45-50 mph at night but I don't blame that on the tire... there was clearly a screw/nail in the tire.

That's 3,000 more than I ever got on a cycle rear tire on my valks. Remember the issue I had with unusual wear with my Cobra 2 years ago? It wasn't that bad, but similar.

If I were to go back to a cycle tire (which will never happen), I would get Metzlers. I guess this means we're not going riding tomorrow!

Two years ago Adrian (chrome) had his Avon cobra rear split and delaminate in the groove and let go while at highway speed in the rain. Luckily he had his trailer on the back for a little added stability. I had one delaminate at 6000 miles. After jerking me around for over a year they said too bad. Will never use avons again.

Had an Avon AM20 and AM21 for about 10 years on my old Honda Gold Wing Interstate and I think that I logged about 6500 miles on them when the rear carcass separated from the belts.
Wrote Avon about it and they pretty much blew me off; this is back in 2007.

The result?  Take your Limey tyres and your 2012 Olympics and shove it to the Queen's Britannia, (not Freddie Mercury's Queen).

Buy American or Japanese (they own us anyway).

Very ugly and dangerous pictures there, friends.

My previous bike was a Goldwing and I went thru 2 sets of Avons on it. The first set was absolutely stellar, put 22k miles on them. The second set, no so good. Only got half that and even at that I had issues with them. Wonder if they changed the formulation or something.

Makes me very, very glad I have a CT on my bike..I do however have an Avon on the back of the BMW that looks like it might have a couple of thousan miles left on it. Got a suspicion that I just ought to go ahead and pull it off. I've got a new Metzler ME880 anyway.

Glad it did not fail while riding, and you are OK!

1.  If you send it in, and you get back according to wear, you will get about $1.95 back!

2.  I have NEVER seen a pic of a CT on a bike do that.  So, why are CT killers on bikes, and MT are great????

3.  Last year several bikers were killed going to and from Sturgis when their MT failed at speed.  NONE died with CT on.

4.  ALL brands will have some tires fail.  I believe Avon has stopped their problem, but THIS tire did fail.

Hurry up and get a new tire on.  Summer is almost over!
