Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.

Vancouver Island, BC, Canada

« on: July 29, 2012, 09:51:07 AM »

I have been working on doing the Super Valk conversion to my Interstate.

I have installed a Brake light on the fender. Also installed front turn signals/running lights on the rear, to have running lights back there. Done the trunk removal mod so it now only takes about 5-10min to remove the trunk.

I purchased a Corbin Stinger style seat off eBay and went to mount it today and found it won't fit.
Seems the angle up against the tank is all wrong.

So my question is:
What have Super Valk owners done for a Solo seat when using an Interstate tank?

Best regards,

Glenn

I have a 4 piece ultimate. In your case you could just buy the drivers seat.

Used a seat off of a Standard 1997/1998, before the upgraded seat.
Fits fine, no tanks issues.

I use a Pre 99 standard seat..... Beware as stock it is a hard riding seat as many will attest....

Being the fix it yourself kinda guy, I went to a local foam factory and got a piece of high density, mold proof foam 2 inches thick..... took the cover off the seat and cut out a chuck of the old foam on the seat  2 inches deep where my butt goes and worked it in... had to do some slicing and forming, but the seat cost me $35 and the foam was $16, already had spray adhesive to put it all back together and hold down the cover.......  I now actually have a seat I can ride all day on.. I actually like the flatness of the older seat vs the newer seat that "cups " yer bottom more.. easier to move around...... I like it better than the stock 2000 I/S seat that came with the bike...
Just what I did.. and BTW.. the seat does fit kinda tight against the I/S tank.

An answer to your original question is you need to do a "Nose Job" on the seat. Have a shop do it if you don't feel comfortable. Remove the cover from the front of the seat. Remove some foam and possibly bend the front of the seat up. Recover the front. The I/S tank is larger and has a bigger bulge right in front of your bulge.

This is my 97, it has an Interstate tank on it. That is a Corbin seat for the standard. It did not fit as you say. The first thing I tried was putting a 1 insh spacer under the latch bracket on the seat. This worked but sat to high. I then pulled back the leather cover on the front nose of the seat and started sawing off the front nose of the fiberglass seat pan. I went a little bit at a time until it would fit nice against the back of the tank. Not sure how much I took off but I figure it was about 2 inches. I pulled the cover back over the seat and never did rivet or glue it, it stays in place just fine. I like the Corbin not so much for the comfort but because it looks great and you plug the sissy  bar into a socket on the driver seat or the passenger seat easily and no tools. I like the comfort of the Ultimate on my IS but the passenger sissy bar is a pain to take on and off if you want the solo look.

OK, great!
That is what I needed to know. This was not just my imagination.

I really like the Stinger look for what I am after.

Guess I'll try cutting this seat up as I already own it.

Thanks so much. I love this board!

I'll post a finished picture once I'm done.
