Changed plugs, oil/filter, petcock cover set, cleaned K-N air filter, and changed timing belts. Got it back thogether and runs like crap. It acts like it's starving for fuel. Had the tank off several times to reassemble the cover set on the petcock. Have spark to all plugs. No change. Is it possible the the ignition generators could be an issue? Checked vac lines and ok there. thanks, Bill

possibly a kinked tank vent.....try running with the gas cap open....if it improves the vent is kinked. But I suspect its still a bad petcock....the thing is a piece of cr@p...I went with a Pingel after messing too long with that OEM valve

On the way to Inzane Sparky's petcock stop flowing (much like you're describing). Disco was behind us so the diaphragm replacement commenced on the roadside. But, they discovered it was in the ball valve side where the restriction was, so the petcocks can go bad there. But Disco, always prepped, had a spare. He's a handy fella to have around.

I agree with all the above, most likely problem.
But how about max strength carb cleaner. Full can of cleaner to half a tank of gas. Has the bike gotten worse over time, over winters storage?

Thanks for the comments. I know there are no kinks or pinched lines. I does run like its starving for fuel. It was running fine before I did everything. Had the cover set and decided to put it in since I had the tank off.
The bike has 227000k miles and is riden 6 out of 7 days a week on average. I changed the belts cause they had 120k miles and just felt it was time to change them. Road trip planned at the end of August and wanted to do some maintenance.
Saw a diagram on here to were you can put the spring on the other side of the cover set to run open. May try that.
Thanks, Bill

I feel confident that I didn't get a tooth off. I did rotate and lined up the timing marks before removing the belts. I will recheck the marks when I can get back to it. Have only wed. night off then on till sat. morn. long week and longer with out the ride.

Check the electrical connections for the ignition coils. If one connector is accidentally left off, only 4 cylinders fire and it runs like crap. You can check the individual exhaust runners to see if any are cool because of no ignition.

Good responses.. My first thought was one or both belts being off a tooth or 2 or 3.. 2nd thought is a pinched tank vent,, very common.. 3rd is an electrical connection[coil].. 4th is a petcock issue,, if you feel like the engine is running out of fuel,, it could be.. That would lead to the petcock/vacuum or vent line..

"runs like crap". Does that mean it idles well, but runs badly at speed, or does it idle poorly, too? Or does it run well at first and then crap out after a while? If it idles badly, I doubt the petcock is the problem. If it idles well and runs badly, I also doubt the petcock is the problem. Reason being, with the carb bowls full (and they probably are if it is idling well), you could turn off the petcock and still do a decent 1/4 mile run. Now, if it runs well at first and then craps out, that could be the petcock. My .02. BlueValk

runs like crap at idle and any rpm. I did crank it up with out the tank on after changing the belts figuring what was in the bowls would run it. Ran bad then but was thinking it could be light on fuel. Will recheck belts and coil connections.
Thanks, Bill
