I am picking up a Valkyrie on Sunday that comes with a second set of exhaust pipes.  I will have one set for sale once I figure out which set I want to keep.  I would appreciate any advice on how to ship an exhaust system.  I would like to know how I am going to do that before I sell them.

How do you find a box for packing and can you use Fedex or UPS for shipping?

Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide.

Dave

You can find a box at the UPS store. You may have to modify it a bit though. I sent it USPS because they were cheaper than FedX and UPS.

Whatever set you sell break them down to the SIMPLEST shortest pieces. Get the measurements-length width etc and wrap the multiple times with newspaper or somethong similar. There used to be such a thing as box stores. No really there was. Failing that try a moving company for your box or you might purchase 2 or 3 to make one. Then get that expanded foam that looks like popcorn to fill in the voids and prevent movement. The less movement when the items are packed the better. The people loading and unloading the trucks could care less about your package. You have to have it right when you present it for shipping. Insurance and a tracking number help also. You can use masking tape to hold the wrapping paper to the individual pieces but DO NOT SKIMP on the tape that holds your box together. The whole trick of the packing process is to prevent ANY of the pieces from having DIRECT contact with each other. Hope this helps you. RIDE SAFE.

When a set of Cobras were shipped to me, they were shipped in a cement post form from a hardware store.

Hey Slvr I have shipped about 5 pairs of Valkyrie exhausts.I have used Greyhound bus lines. Best rates and great depots. They will drop of at any stops along the way. I will only ship within Canada as Greyhound will not cross the border with packages. Maybe the same on the south end of the border too.

I bet that worked good, but dang... a 12"X4' Sonotube costs $20 or $25, and I guess that's not quite big enough...

If you have a billion grocery store plastic bags you need to get rid of, they make great stuffing
for shipping Valkyrie parts  cooldude and whoever receives them probably won't hate them as much as
ghost turds... I guess their weight might finally start to add up if you use them to pack something as
big as a set of pipes...

Once I received a set of pipes that the sender had wrapped in a giant sheet of corrugated cardboard. He put
one pipe on the sheet, rolled it a time or two, put on the other pipe, and rolled that, and then taped it all up.
It was a set of $100 ebay pipes, not a pristine set, but it seemed to have worked.

Bubblewrap is great stuff. I have found that styrofoam peanuts will move around. Bubblewrap will stay put if you tape it together. Peanuts can be used to fill in the spaces not occupied by pipes and bubblwrap. Put extra cardboard pieces in the ends to prevent blowout.
If you have the UPS store provide the box and do all this it will cost.

It's easy enough to find large pieces of cardboard at most all stores like Lowes or Home Depot. They are happy to give the cardboard to you, since they throw it all away anyway.

All you need then is a little ingenuity and ability to make a box custom fit for your purpose.

The best way to make a box in my estimation is with a hot melt glue gun. I've made many this way and they are as strong as you want to make it.

When I shipped the Cobras to Xring I sleeved 2 cardboard  concrete post form together (very heavy waxed cardboard) and then wrapped the pipes themselves in foundation gasket.  ITs a VERY heavy foam tape that goes between the wood joists and the concrete foundation.  I got the widest stuff menards had 10"(?) Lots of packing tape.  IT seemed to hold up to the shipping gorillas between indiana and mississippi.

I bought a box off of U-Haul and went to work.

Wrapped one side in bubble wrap, about 4 wraps.
Wrapped other side the same way.

Took both sides and wrapped them together in about 4 more wraps of bubble wrap.

Put it all in the box I got from U-Haul and proceeded to wrap the insides with plastic store bags.   When the box got full, I put almost a full roll of Duct Tape around it.    Called UPS for a pickup.

Driver who picked it up shook it.    He had a couple 3 of the bubbles sound off.   Scared him and he gently put the package down.   Asked what was in it, told him and he had to have a look see.   Told him fine with me, BUT, you will wrap it as tight or tighter than I had it.   He re-wrapped it, put it in his big ole Brown Truck and 7 days later, I got a confirmation it had been delivered.    Called the guy who received it and asked how it came through.    He said the box took a beating but the innards was safe as a new baby wrapped up in da horse pistol.

Most of the other stuff I ship, it get a UPS box and some bubble wrapping and some tape and it is gone.    Haven't lost anything yet, knock on wood.

Take it to a freight company! They will charge a little extra for residential delivery.

It should be a whole lot cheaper. It will take a bit longer!

Hafta package real good for them however.

Sell them to your next door neighbor, and save the shipping costs........seriously, Greyhound would be the least expensive.....Whatever/whoever you use, be sure to have plenty of packing material and items seperated to prevent any contact.

It held up very well and I was very impressed by your packing.
