I have a problem with my  97 Valk Standard in that for the last 2 tankfulls I get fuel starvation and then switch to the reserve tank, and when I fill up it takes only around 4 gallons.  Last time I opened the filler and rocked the bike sideways, heard fuel sloshing inside before filling total 4.25 gallons.  At each fillup I carefully filled to the top.  Any ideas as what may be the cause?

You may need to remove the tank and then the petcock.  Undecided
Something may be blocking the lower screen on the petcock screen that goes up into the tank.

I am about to do the same on my Interstate for the same reasons.  tickedoff

Good luck,

I've had this problem for the last two tanks of fuel. At about 80 miles into the tank and the bike at 65 mph the bike will go into fuel starvation. Switching to reserve does not immediately solve the problem. The bike stumbles and slows to a stop and will only run by blipping the throttle. The engine will not rev beyond 3500-4000. After a minute or so the bike will run normally but has a top speed of 55 or so until I put fuel in it. Both times the bike took 3.2 -3.3 gallons to fill. Once filled bike runs as it should. Today I pulled the tank installed a pinwall fuel valve without a vacuum port. I cut two inches off the OEM valve riser and silver soldered it onto the pinwall to get approximately the same reserve as the stock valve. Reinstalled the Honda tank screen after cleaning it. Very little crud in the screen when removed. I eliminated the quick disconnect I had installed earlier to remove another problem area. If my DanMarc valve shows up tomorrow in the mail I'll put it on, if not the tank will go back on and I'll test ride it.

Just my opinion, but... the oem petcock problems can be solved permanently if you replace that junk with an aftermarket petcock, they are available with or without vacumn inlets if you can't remember to turn your fuel  on and off manually.  It is the only permanent solution.  Several are available, I use a pingel manual petcock, it has a smaller reserve good for about 20 miles.  Hoser  JMHO

Reading thru Coastie's last post, I think he means Pingle,
not Pinwall.

Petcock......

All it takes is a small pinhole in it.....

I think that when the tank is full... hydraulic pressure helps keep the damaged diaphragm open... when the tank get lower, lees pressure from the gas and the valve wont stay open on the vacuum pull.....

Thats why it doesn't fail completely- until the hole gets bigger.... Just my thoughts....

I have had issues just like that twice..... But I still run the stock......

I always look to these problems with skepticism when using "Kentucky windage" to justify a problem that may not really exist.

Additionally, I have never bought the premise of the clogged screen on the petcock filler tube.

Now I know there will be many retorts about experiencing clogged screens but that just buttresses my view.  The probability of the a clogged screen is so minute and is not reflected by the exaggerated number of the reports. "Chicken Little" I would think!

I have a Pingel on my gas tank.

I dont see a problem with 4 gallons needed at fillup after going on reserve.  Reserve is a gallon or so and the total is 5.3.......seems to add up fairly closely to me...and also, if you fill it on the side stand you are getting a tad less in there.

If its feeling like its going on reserve and theres plenty of gas...most likely a petcock issue
