There are a lot of reasons that my '99 I/S is such a low mileage bike but none of them are any good. Suffice to say that I'm now beginning to put some more miles on it and I sometime wonder if I should just-do-it or if I should keep her at home and just polish and preserve her for parade duty. I have two other bikes that I ride that have far more miles on them. It's not that I enjoy them any better it's just that they're older. What kind of mileage would you say warrants treating a Valkyrie as a collectible?

How many miles are on it?

13000 on my "new to me" '99 IS.

I treat mineas collectable and it has 89K on the odo.

But, seriously, museum quality bikes are under a 1000 on the odo, many quite a bit under.

I refuse to have something that I love to use... and not use it.
This goes for cars, bikes, guns...
If I think it is too nice to use... I will sell it to someone who will put it away, because "I" will use it.
I ran across a beautiful S&W model 27 .357 Magnum. 5" barrel, nickel plated, looked unfired.
I bought it, put a few hundred rounds thru it... and sold it to a collector. I knew that if I had it, I was going to shoot the hell out of it.
It was in a closet for 30 years... untouched before I bought it.
I am like that with anything I own tho.

If I want to see a museum quality Valkyrie I'll ride to Barber Motorcycle Museum. If you want something to just look at then buy art, that bike is meant for riding.  cooldude

Blondie's '99 Tourer had 3,600 on the clock when bought third-hand last year.

We've since worn the OEM tires off it; odo is showing ~7,300...

I'm at 3,950 miles.

Last year at IZ8 there was one with less than 1,000 miles on it..

He lived about 20 miles from JC and trailered it over there.....

That is just sick to have such a great bike
and just look at it.
I have a Harley and my IS.
I have ridden a few long trips on both.
It blows my mind when I see a touring
model bike that gets less than 5000 a year.

I have put over 10,000 on mine already this year.  Probably add another 3,000 - 3,500 next week on the Blue/Grey ride.

You're probably wondering how this could happen; averaging less than 400 miles a year! I bought the Valkyrie in '99 because I fell in love with her at first sight. I had ridden since '65 and was already in over my head with a couple of other bikes, a full time job, a 4 year old start up business and my wife was suffering with multiple sclerosis. Sometimes life comes at you fast! We began to build an accessible house and there went another couple of years. My wife passed away after 25 years of marriage and I had to finish the new home, run the business, and work my day job, whew! I remarried and found myself with 3 great children to raise -and, oh yea, a new wife with her own business. Wonderful - but groan! Not much time for riding. I ride to work when I can but I'm only 1.5 miles from it and only another block from my wife's business and less than a mile to my other business. My Honda 305 Dream is better suited for these trips! I kept the Valkyrie because she helps me daydream of being free to wander the roads as so many of you do here on this forum. Heck, your trip reports, pictures and videos you put together take me to places that I'll likely never see; keep it up!

I can't sell her because she's not replaceable; a rolling piece of art. The last bike I sold was an '85 V-Max and I still regret it; fun bike; and I bought an '86 v-Max to get one back in my stable. I love to work on 'em, spiff 'em up, polish 'em and ride 'em when I can. If the economy keeps going south and when my kids will leave home (and not keep coming back) then maybe sometime soon I'll show up at rides or rallies with nothing but free time to enjoy life with the freedom that only a motorcycle trip can deliver.

So meanwhile, vicariously yours,

You got a good point. Having to dream about rides. If it keeps you going everyday for the big ride then its well worth it. To me, i think have a bike set around is worse on it then riding it. Dad had a Vette he drove twice a year and it was more work keeping it running then it was to drive it and service it.

I ran across this one on a memorial ride in Aug 2007.

It's a 2003, the guy riding it said that he developed back problems after he bought it and hadn't been able to ride much.....

If he rode the entire ride he should've added about 100 mi to it that day.

I haven't seen him or the bike on any rides since.

And we usually make several Memorial Rides / Poker Runs in the area every year.

I did give him my name and number and asked him if he ever decided to sell it to give me a call.

Okay, you guys got me all lathered up for some highway miles. I registered for Inzane 9 today. I don't think I'll be trailering to CO so I'll be putting on at least 1500 miles or so. Woohoo! My wife says she'll stay home and keep everything in check. I feel like someone just opened the cage door. . . dreams of the open road . . .

My '99 I/S has 95K miles on it and I'm sitting here trying to decide if I want to do my timing belts before Sturgis or after Sturgis.  Got alot of mods I'm going to do before Sturgis, but have never done the timing belt change before and would hate to mess it up before the trip.  Sturgis will put at least 3500 on the odo and I'll probably put at least that much on it before I head out, which means it'll probably hit the 100K mark while on the trip.  What would you do?

I would order two of the Gates T275 belts from Rockauto and install at your leisure. No hurry, most are just fine at 100,000. The Gates T275 belts are the same as the Honda parts but only cost $18.00 each.

I'd be embarrassed, but that pic was taken the night I took delivery of my Valk; December 23rd of 2000... Smiley

It's got just a few more on it now, although with any luck by the end of this year it should look just like the above pic once again!  Cheesy

Sad story - Friend of mine bought a 2000 in the '99/2000 time frame...

In 2002 he had to replace both tires... Due to dry rot and flattening out from sitting in the same place (And him taking a ride on them with < 5 PSI).

In 2007 he had I think around 3,000 miles on it. And most of that was from me dragging him on short rides and one run up to the Talimena (600ish miles round trip).

In late 2007 his wife gave him an ultimatum... Ride it or sell it... So he placed the ads, had a buyer show up, cash in hand, wanted to buy it right now. Only stipulation - The buyer wanted to see the bike being ridden. Didn't say it had to be the buyer riding it, he just wanted to see it being ridden...

So my friend hops on, rides down his street, turns around, and in a stroke of utter brilliance decides to hot dog it down the street past the buyer.

Romps it, flies by the guy, doesn't see the Mustang turning onto the residential street in time, and panic swerves into a brick mailbox to avoid a head on collision.

Rips his shoulder up bad (Time in the hospital kind of ripping your shoulder up), plus totals the Valk. Lots of up front cosmetic damage, but worst of all ripped the engine open from impacting the brick mail box...

...seconds from selling it...

The extra sad part - The insurance settlement came in $2,000 MORE then what he was trying to sell it for...

IFRC, the lowest mileage Valk is the Red & White '97 at the Barber Museum.  I remember when it was for sale on ebay.  It didn't even have 10 miles on it and that was 2 or 3 years ago.

Some of you guys have made me feel a little better.

My Valk has 28K on it.  I have them all but the 1st 2765.  and a few from buddies test riding her.

My so will start preschool almost next door next year, and my wife's hip is getting replaced next WEEK.  Hopefully those  add up to more seat time for ol' Jabba.
