What does the data say?

« on: August 13, 2012, 07:12:06 AM »

Thag needs a couple of tires mounted before a trip at the end of the month, so we're going to get together at my house on Saturday.  May be preceded by breakfast at a north side location.  Times still TBD.

Hecklers and layabouts welcome as this should be minor wrenching only, please.  One bay of the garage will be taken up by the tire mount gear, the other by the bike being shoed.  Plenty of driveway though and half of it is well shaded.

WDAN, this would be a good opportunity to make that final connection on your driving lights, especially if the esteemed Mr. Godfire shows up.

At least it looks like Godfire will be bringing a little bit of that northern weather down with him.

What's the possibility of some hecklers helping with instructions on me installing new bushings in my rear progressives?

Beggars cannot be choosers, and please consider this my official first beg for help from the membership.

I discovered a brand-new Rivco center stand for sale out here, and after some communication and horse tradin', closed the deal.

Well, the new stand arrived today, in the original box.  I promptly opened it, and exclaimed, "Ooooooh...shiny!"

Here comes the beggin':  unbeknownst to me, in order to install the centerstand, one must lift our beloved Valkyries off Terra Firma.  I don't have a lift.  Therefore, I am beggin' for some support / help / encouragement for getting the new hardware installed this weekend. Cry

In return for tolerating my beggin' and potential mechanical lameness, I am offering to buy lunch for the first club member who can help out with my quandary.

Thanks - appreciate the help, in advance.

AH - I not only haven't installed the bushings yet, looks like I won't enjoy the fine fellowshipping that goes on during one of these here hootenannies.  We close on our hourse on the 24th and when I mentioned a possible motorcycle "thing on Saturday" I got a look only Miss Lana can give and not get arrested.  So now I've rented a storage unit (we're homeless for about a week) and will be moving for the first of two times in a two week span on Saturday.  Oh Booyyee!!!  Blessed my son is a Chiropractor.  And I was gonna buy lunch for all.  Everyone have productive fun.

I may need a safe place to store the fat lady for a week or two.   Huh? What?  Where?

Thag doesn't know it yet, but he and I are going to start around 8:30 am  He's offered to bring donuts and kolaches.  I'll have coffee, water, and stuff available.

Hopefully, we'll be able to wrap stuff up by 1:00 pm (it's  a MINI wrench party, remember?)  If so, I suggest we ride out to Ponder for CFS or jalapeno cheeseburgers.  If time is an issue, we can re-direct to RG Burgers in Denton.

PM me for the address.

Thanks, all, for the help and fellowship today at Dave's house in Corinth.

I stood Enterprise on the center stand for the first time in my garage this afternoon, and I am happy to report the stand was an awesome investment. cooldude

Anyone needing a set of hands to help with anything, please let me know, and if I'm not tied up, you can count on me to be there.

Appreciate the assist!

We need pictures.  I know some of the attendees know how to take pictures and post them.  I had originally planned to crash this party but after Thursday's weekend forecast came out I wimped out.  I really didn't want to wash my bike for a third time this week!

I hope y'all had fun and got some work done.

I saw no cameras making an appearance at the wrench party.  I did see a lot of wrenching on ThagAndy's, WDan's and Admiral's Valks.  The rest of us were hecklers and helpers.  Or both.

I had to leave at 12:00 to do some business but it was going strong as I left with Disco, ValkPilot, Admiral, Chauffeur, WDan and me in attendance.  As always, it's great to get together and share, plus the weather was cool (for August) and rain started well after the end time.  Who could ask for more?

Oh, wait. Someone did ask for more. Hay wants pictures.

Did anyone snap a shot or two?

I don't think any of us took pictures of Valks being wrenched, even though we changed Thag's front and rear tire and re-lubed the rear drive.  Keith installed his centerstand and we finally fixed Dan's seat latch and hooked up his driving lights.

Seven bikes showed up; five went to lunch in Ponder, Texas where CFS and cheeseburgers were enjoyed by all, along with fried green tomatoes and deep fried eggplant.

On the way to lunch, we passed a motorcycle on the side of the road.  We slowed and asked if everything was OK, then stopped when we didn't get a thumbs up.

The young man's name was Jimmy and he had a 750 Shadow that had quit running on his way from Denton to Abilene.

His air box was hanging loose, so it didn't take long to figure out that too much air was the problem.  It looked broken at the mounts, so duct tape was retrieved from one of our saddlebags.

Chauffer examined it further and discovered that the throttle body intake tube wasn't sealed to the back of the airbox in spite of old tape that was trying to hold everything in place.

Jimmy explained that his son had knocked the bike over in his garage about a year and a half ago and he had taped the airbox back in place because he thought it was broken and he didn't have the money to take it to a dealer for repair.

We dismantled the air box, fixed the seal, and remounted it using the exsiting mount bolts.  No duct tape required.

In 15 minutes he was back on his way, after he sent us these pictures from his camera phone.

We suspect that bike hasn't run as well in 18 months as it did on the way to Abilene.

Is that Thagandy's rubber-bottomed magnetic parts bowl on Jimmy's gas tank?   angel   Why, yes it is.  Just one of the aspects of our stop that blew him away.   cooldude

I wish we would have thought to pull the lift out of Thag's trailer just to see the look on his face!

I texted him after he sent the pics but have not heard from him.  Hope the weather didn't get him.

That woulda been awesome!  Coulda pulled out the used tires along with my brake pads we didn't use and offered a tire/brake change for him and also given him donuts that were left over.

Thanks everyone for the help on the new treads.  Hoping I dont have to do that again any time soon.  Just an FYI, on the way home I stopped by Discount Tire and asked if they could take the tires off my hands.  They would for $6.50.  So I continued on to a local tire shop and they took both for $2.

I just got a text from Jimmy.  After we went our separate ways, he got rained on a lot and his backpack blew open and spread his clothes all over I-20 (he stopped and got them all back), but he did make it to Abilene.  He also says the bike runs "like a champ".

Even all geared up, he would have had a full day.  He was wearing shorts, t-shirt, sneaks, backpack, and no helmet on a bike with no wind protection and said that "Yesterday's ride was legendary"!

He can't thank us enough and says, "God Bless".
