I did the search, found 'some' info, but not enough. The rear part of the rear fender has One single bolt holding the two fender halves together. http://www.ronayers.com/Fiche/TypeID/26/Type/REAR_FENDER_-_GRAB_RAIL/MakeID/1/Make/Honda/YearID/40/Year/1999/ModelID/6791/Model/GL1500CF/GroupID/289297/Group/REAR_FENDER_-_GRAB_RAILIt's item #15 in the attached, also called 90085-MZ1-000, Bolt Special (6x17). Does that mean 6mm x 17mm? I suppose I could just go the local dealer and order it. But I'd still like to know. I lost the original somehow, can't find anything in the home supply to fit.

I may have a spare. I won't be home for a few days, but I just installed a hitchdoc, so had to replace the bolts as well. If I can remember, I'll dig into my parts bin in the garage. As long as it's there and you can wait a bit, I'll get it sent on out.

PaC - the one he's talking about isn't replaced with the hitch - it's on top of the fenders, where they meet, and holds them together at the top.
csj - you should be able to go to any decent hardware store and pick up the bolt. 20mm probably won't be too long, but to be safe, I'd throw a washer in there to keep it from digging into the tire on full suspension compression. 6mm is the correct thread diameter, but the diagram doesn't give the thread pitch. If you have the option, grab one of both pitches (fine and coarse). Shouldn't be too expensive - even if you opt for stainless steel.

Hell...that one. Yeah, helps to pull the diagram. Agree with the other posters. If nothing else, and if one is close, try Tractor Supply Co. in the specialty bins in the hardware department. I've found all kinds of usefull/useless stuff in there.

With metric nuts and bolts there are only 2 different thread pitchs: 1. fine and 2. course.
Easy enough to tell apart when you're buying them.

That it is, but there's no indication on that diagram, or others I've looked at, that say which one fits the nut permanently affixed to the fender of the bike.

Thanks guys, found the item at two different bike shops locally. Yes it is 6mm x 17mm, one shop charged me $0.84, and the other gave me a free bolt.
Everything is secure now. No more rattling fender.
Now it''s time to get some more light on the back of the bike.
