It was only making an intermittent noise but I figgered I better check it. Bike has only 29K.
The cage was mostly destroyed and all the balls and the inner race just fell out.  Now the outer  race is stuck inside the wheel . Any trick advice to get it out? It's soaking in WD40 right now.
The right bearing came out rather easily.
THe splines look fine.  The dampers were shrunken and just rattiling around in there so they will get replaced too.
Now a serious question.  The hole in the wheel behind the stuck race looks somewhat out of round.  Is this going to cause a problem?  The axle spacers and bearings are the only spinning parts right? This hole is just a clearance hole?  Please tell me I have no worries about this hole and how to get that damn race out.  Is there a special tool?
Thanks!

That race should be hard to remove,, just keep working from side to side with a good edged long punch and it should eventually give way.. I doubt the hole is out of round,, I think what your looking at is just the way the hole is bored thru the casting.. The casting is far from perfect and may give the allusion of a problem.. When installing the bearings drive or push on the outer diameter only and try not to forget the spacer..

You can try a a bearing puller with a slide hammer to remove the outer race.  You might want to do the Double Row Bearing Mod.    http://www.valkyrieriders.com/shoptalk/5204_bearing_mod.pdf

I had the same problem. Took the wheel to an auto machine shop. He used an old valve from a bin full of them. He inserted it through the wheel and tack welded it to the race. Then he tapped it out. $20

Same thing on Don't bike, flush with the seat so couldn't tap it out. His son took it out in pieces with a cold chisel and 5 lb hammer.

Well,, if the bearing really won't come out,, and,, if you have access to a welder,, just run a bead around the race and it'll fall out..

True enough.  The welding will cause it to shrink as the weld cools.  Do not get the alum too hot thought.

What I did was take a Dremel tool and grind 2 flats 180 degrees (opposite) each other on the inside race of the outer bearing race for the slide hammer bearing puller to grip on.  popped out no problem.  With out grinding the flats, the puller just kept slipping off the bearing race as bearing seat in the wheel would not allow the puller to get a full grip.  Heating up the bearing seat(wheel) with a heat gun and dropping an ice cube on the bearing may help, but shouldn't be necessary.

Ok, so the race is out after much spraying/heating and prying.  The bad bearing boogered about 1/2 the inside flat part of the wheel bearing pocket.  About 1/2 is smooth and flat for the new bearing to sit flush against once it's pressed in.
Will it be OK?  Am I taking a chance? Should I replace/repair the wheel?
Any tips folks?
All parts are on order so I have a week or so to deliberate?!
Thanks,
