That's very humbling. Cry I can only hope and pray today's young Americans are half as good as the "greatest generation".

Doc, you're obviously a believer in "The Nation that forgets its defenders, will itself be soon forgotten" .  Thanks for the post. Those numbers should be engraved in stone at every town square, city hall and state building.  Thanks so much.   cooldude

The National D-Day memorial is in Bedford, Va (my backyard).

It's quite a sobering experience.

The Bedford Boys (116th Reg, 29th Inf) lost 23 men during the invasion of Normandy.

All them from the community of Bedford, Va.

With the population of Bedford at about 3,200 the community lost more men per capita than any other single community in the US.

What a beautiful memorial that is......how fitting.  I'd love to see it in person.

Went on a cruise last week with my wife, her parents and her mom's cousin. He was at D-day. Was at the Battle of the Bulge. He shared some of the details with me while we were gone as if it were yesterday. He's 87. Been through a lot. And yet has a great sense of humor and quick wit. And just last year ate his first raw oyester and now can't get enough of em. He's one of my all time heros. William Carey Jarvis. His brother was President of Universal and then his nephew.
