I just went down with the bike last week and have damaged most of the plastic on the front end of the bike. It's a 99 interstate green & silver. The insurance co wants to give me 4900.00 after my deductable of 250.00. I asked them how they arrived at that figure and she said that was what a dealer would pay me if I brought it in to sell to him. That doesn't seem like a good way to determine the value of something. I sure can't by another bike like mine for 4900.00. They have totaled the bike but I road 500 miles home on it after the accident and it runs great. They said they could sell it back to me with a salvage title but would no longer insure it . Does that mean you cannot ride a bike with a salvage title?  What to do   what to do  Any body been here done this?

I bought my 99IS with a salvage title. Rode it for four years and then had an accident of my own.
They wrote it off and let me purchase it back.
I rebuilt it, re-certified it and it is back on the road now.

Don't let them pay you that pittance. Insist on having them show you a replacement at that price.
A proper replacement would cost at least $7,000 off eBay.

Tell them if they can get a bike at that price to go ahead and get it, and send it over.
Same colour, similar milage etc.

Insurance companies don't want to spend a dime more than necessary.
Remind them that you were not about to take it to a dealer and ask for cash.

I had a similar event with a car 20 years ago. When I pushed back they gave me a couple grand more.

Good luck.

Don't take no for an answer. Let them know lawyers cost way more than settling this properly.

Best regards,

Glenn

I recommend you get some help with the negotiations....not a reasonable offer at all.  Don't forget any damaged riding gear as that should be covered too.

Tom,

Who's your insurance company.  I've negotiated with my insurance company on a totaled 99 Interstate as well as a totaled Royal Star Venture.  Any insurance company will try to pay as little as they can get away with.  They are suppose to make you whole or in the same (or better) condition you were in before the accident.  Tell the insurance company you would prefer that they replace your bike.  They know that it can't be done for what they offered you.

As stated earlier - don't forget to include ALL add-ons, even if they were on the bike when you purchased it.  Insurance company may tell you receipts are required if you want to be compensated for add-ons.  Don't believe it.  If it is an add-on item and it improved the value of your bike - you should be compensated for it.  I used a J & P Cycle catalog to verify cost of my add-ons.

Good luck and keep us informed on how things are progressing.

Agree with the rest of posters, and add go ahead and buy back the wreck. You have first rights to it. Fix it or part it or save it for parts. You can insure a salvaged bike, just not full coverage. If 2nd party is at fault in another accident, they will have to cover it in full again.
