Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

Yes, that is the starter relay.  I bought one off of ebay and had to reverse the larger power wires to make it work.  You probably need the harness that I mentioned in the earlier post, the one that RJ posted the link to.  You have to move one wire in the harness to a different spot.  Also the relay itself.

Oh, and looking at your picture again, it would appear that there might have been some modifications to your wiring.  Not sure, I would have to look again at mine to make sure.

The way you described it; "this is LIKE the starter relay."  So, does that mean it isn't the starter relay but is like it?  ???

No.  It means I think it is but I'm not sure.  And I've been talking to my teenagers too much.

Why did it fry?

These "fry" when the contacts get severely corroded...and this is a routine maintenance "must do" if you want to avoid a similar outcome.  1999 models and earlier do not have starter relay covers but my understanding is that 2000 and newer (mine is a '99 so I can't validate) have protective covers to minimize effects from environmental exposure.

If you do a lot of riding in the rain or live near the ocean you might want to look at this more often.

Take a look at your starter relay, clean the contacts well, and be sure to apply a little dielectric grease to the plug.

cooldude  I hear that. I frustrated one of my older grandkids a while back re. her use of the word "like."  I sat there and counted the number of times she used it in her phone conversation and teased her about it afterward. She told me there was no way to converse without using it, so I reiterated some of her conversation without using "like."  I was told "grandpa, you're so old fashioned," to which I agreed. I then suggested she write out the very thing we had just discussed...which she did. Strange....not one "like" in the written version, so when I asked why she just got up and walked away. Recently I've noticed a change in her chatty methods, maybe grandpa has made an impression after all.

Like....I hope so. It's not as though like a prospective employer will like listen to you!  Grin

BF's question should be answered before you "cook" another relay.   ???

Probably a combination of long hours riding over two days and some corrosion on the spade connectors.  Gonna replace it and do ratllebars wiring mod.
