I have been thinking on buying a half helmet for summer riding but don`t know what is the best for the money out there. I have a full and a 3/4 but they are a little hot on mid-day rides. So I thought I would pull from the vast info that sleeps on the VRCC. BTW, I`m cheap. Thanks for any help. Don.

How is the 'wind lift'? Does it pull up on your chin much? I thought about getting some instead of our 3/4 helmet.

Hey Spirited, I am a dealer of helmets of all types. DOT: Halfs, shortys, polo style, German, open, modular, full as well as Novelty. I can also get that Carbon Fiber edition for much less money. You can check out our companies site for reference but I can offer better prices to VRCC members. Heres the link. http://ironhorsehelmets.com/motorcycle.htm#RaceHelmets These are the lightest DOT helmets made.

i've got an HJC half helmet, i do get some "lifting" but nothing serious paid only $40 for it, there was a 25% sale at the local shop. i wouldn't buy one on line 'cause you can't get a feel for em, either that, or try one out at the local Harley dealer, get the model #, then buy it on line! just joking!! it's always better to support the local economy.
i like my helmet, i think they all have removable ear covers, a removable liner would be great!!
good luck.

Don I totally agree with Jess, the Scorpion EXO-100 can't be beat for the money....and that integrated sun visor is great.

I have a Fulmer trooper half helmet. And for the $45 I paid at the dealer, I really like it. It's nothing fancy with no ear covers, no venting. But it is very comfortable and I get no lift since I ride behind a windshield. This is also why I wasn't worried about the lack of venting.

Don, You said you were cheap, check out this site too. I have purchased full face, modular and Nolan half helmet from them. They will tell you how to measure your head, sizing info. If you don't like it, don't fit, they will ship it back free and refit you. I had no need to do this, just follow their sizing directions. They have novelty helmets, full face, carbon fiber, half, modular, German, beanie, open faced, you name it. You can go from cheap to expensive in any style. Have fun!! http://motodirect.com/category-1/1-Motorcycle-Helmets.html

Jess, That Scorpion looks great, similiar style to my Nolan. I really like the built in visor. That would solve my glasses/contacts problems This is the Nolan I bought, but not from this site. I bought it on the above mentioned site (Moto-Direct) for $40.00. BIG differance from HDL. http://www.hondadirectlineofshadyside.com/stores/product.asp?pid=3157&str=2&ID=374986491

Well, any helmet with a visor will lift if it gets in the wind stream. The visor on the Scorpion looks smaller than normal, but it's deceiving because the front of the helmet is extended out a bit to be able to contain the enclosed visor. What I hated for years was the short time it took for the 3-snap visors to loosen up to the point they would rattle, and this will not happen with the scorpion design (I even had occasion to stop the bike and get off looking for the rattle source LOL). Also, the scorpion is the biggest half I've ever had (but not notably heavier) and it sits down on your head more and fits very snugly and comfortably (with a good fit) so it is definitely less subject to blowing around in the wind. I ride an IS with OE shield (at 5'9") so I'm pretty much out of the wind, but I do like to ride the back roads standing on the boards, and that will grab any helmet with a visor over 40mph. I didn't think I'd use the visor much with a fairing bike and WileyX specs, but it does come in handy in the cold, rain, longer hauls on the freeway and when riding into a low sun.
The book on all helmets is that they are generally made for either round or oblong heads. I am oblong (fore and aft, not side to side), and the scorpion is the best fitting and most comfortable I've ever had (and like many, I have 5 or 6 more in the shed). With the neck/ear curtain on, it is as warm as any 3/4.
Two things I cannot buy on-line are footwear and helmets (fit). So I rode around to a few shops one day last Fall and found the scorpions for try-on. Good thing, as the size chart would have me in a large, but the XL was perfect. I came home and ordered the one I wanted for best price (I couldn't find more than a 10 buck variance in them anywhere when I was looking).

I've been using the Scorpion EXO-100 since last summer/fall and I do think it is OK. The lift is not too bad with a windshield, but terrible without one. I went for a quick ride on my wife's Shadow last Thursday with the windshield removed and felt like the strap was going to cut through my neck...at about 50mph! Went home and strapped on my Arai Corsair (full face). One thing that I do not like about the EXO-100 is its weight. I think that it's a bit on the heavy side for a half helmet which causes a bit of neck strain by the end of a long day. Side by side, my full face Arai feels lighter. Of course, I am comparing apples to oranges... Nevertheless, I prefer the EXO-100 on shorter rides - under 200mi. The EXO-100 in action Sunday, June 7th!
