What is the most popular route down to Fredericksburg?
I don't care to BS around. Pretty much want a straight forward shot.
I am looking at going through Cleburne on down through Hico on 281 and continuing to 290 and head west into Fredericksburg.

Is that about the best route unless I decide to take I35 as far as I can?

That's the best route.  We'll have people going down throughout the day from DFW and I'm sure groups will be forming.  I am planning on going down either Thursday or early on Friday so that I can pre-ride a bit and also make sure all is in order before the thundering herd arrives.  But I'm sure others will post their intentions.

I usually take 377 from Benbrook to Commanche and take 16 through Llano to Fredericksburg.  Not sure which would be faster.

+1, you can stop in at Cooper's and have some Q. Rode that route last year to the RFK's fund raiser in DFW, but I was coming from Beaumont. Weather permitting, may do it again this year.

If you are riding  and it is a must that you keep your eyes on the road, you are riding too fast.

For some reason I find both 377 and 281 remarkably boring so I tend to deviate on the way south... so here's  what we usually end up doing:

  • 360 down all the way to 287
  • 287 to Midlothian, take 67
  • 67 all the way until you hit 220 and take that to Hico
  • Lunch @ Koffee Kup.... I'm sure you know the place  cooldude
  • 281 down to Hamilton, look up FM 2005
  • Nice and twisty 2005 to Goldthwaite, take 16 south
  • 16 South all the way down to FBurg
  • B&B, Dinner at either Altdorf or Ausländer. Perhaps a brew or three
