Author Topic: Any negatives with installing an I/S tank on Tourer?  (Read 1554 times)

Need to replace the fuel tank on my '97 Tourer and am considering getting an Interstate tank. Been weighing all the pros and cons but was curious if those who had done it noticed any difference in handling with the extra weight up top. Does the bike feel more top-heavy at slow or highway speeds? Aside from the cost, the only other downside I can see might be this issue. Any thoughts would be welcome.

Only downside I've ever had (100,000 miles+) is that it costs more to fill up! 2funny

Top heavy in reference to a motorcycle is very subjective since the majority of weight is above the axles.

Strap a couple of 1 gallon water bottles to the top of your tank to see (feel) the difference.

Adjustment to weight distribution is easy and everlasting.

I think the length of a riders legs and seat height has more influence.

I have an Interstate tank on my Tourer. No difference in handling. I think it looks better on the bike, I appreciate the extra miles between fill ups, I would do it again only sooner. Drawbacks would be that you may also want to get a new seat and may want a fuel gauge and sending unit.

Here is my experiences:
I rode my bike both ways...
Originally the tourer tank, then opted for the Interstate tank...
but now I run the 3 gallon belly tank with the tourer tank.

The cost of used tourer tank, plus the cost of a belly tank which give you an added 3 gallons down low I think is far less than the price of a Interstate tank.

Plus running a belly tank you no longer have to worry about hydro-lock. since you have a small fuel pump pulling out of the bottom tank...

I like riding to Reno/Lake Tahoe which is 220 miles without stopping, going over the pass with 35-40lbs less pounds up above makes it that much better.

Stopping cause I want to stop, vs having to stop at a gas station.

just my thoughts...
