Drive train maintenance

Hi All,
Just a couple of quick questions, I am ready to do my 10K final drive maintenance, is it good to use Bel Ray waterproof grease on both ends of the driveshaft?  Secondly what do you use to clean the splines before applying the new lube?   As always thanks for taking the time to reply, this is the best board on the net.

Yes for the Bel Ray grease.

I normally remove as much old grease as possible with a rag and nylon brush.  After that, I wet a rag with brake cleaner and finish the job.  Because I use brake cleaner to finish, I always replace the "O" rings.

I use the Bel Ray on the wheel splines. Guard Dog ia also a favorite. Honda's Moly Paste isn't waterproof and with rear tires lasting longer, the paste won't stay put long enough. For the drive shaft, I use Valvoline DuraBlend Grease. It has a 3% moly in it and it stays put for a long time. I have also used it on wheel splines with no problems. 106K and no rear drive/shaft issues.

Thats what I used on the Driveshaft only the fully synthetic version at the local auto store.  BelRay on everything else.

There is weep hole from the cup to the rear differential. Moly paste will plug this hole and cause premature failure of your drive shaft. USE ONLY GREASE HERE. You've been warned. I had two failures here before realizing the dealer used paste and plugged this hole during a warranty repair. I was leaving on a trip and had to get a different rear end to fix the problem as I did not have time to rebuild. Check the old archives if in doubt.

Good info on the holes.  AND, use a light, assembly coating of grease, or if you use too much, the same plugging might occur. Some can get away with grease for quite a while, but it is not the best way.

Moly Paste is 60% moly. Valvoline's Durablend Grease is 3% moly. This is what Honda recommends on both ends of the drive shaft. Yes: If you use 60% on the drive shaft, it will probably plug the weep hole.

Belray is fine for EVERYTHING and the holes are much over rated. If I had my way I would seal those suckers up. If and I say If you ever get any rear end oil to come out it actually only washes off the grease thats there and slings it against the housing. Lets just say that I do have experience with this. I have gone from the most expensive Krytox to a few others and have found that the Belray is adequate. The seal is in the front of the cup for the driveshft I was thinking that  if I could cut a groove in the cup seal up the holes and then pack the thing with grease that would be the best.
