Does anyone knows the power specs of the factory radio on the Interstate? (watts per channel)

Seems like I saw years ago a Honda add said 25watts per channel, but seems like I have also seem online 7watts per channel and also one place listed it as 14watts per channel... Undecided

Sorry I know that's not really specific but I don't think it is very high output wattage, I would guess between 7 & 14 watts. cooldude

Thanks,
Matt

It may not seem a lot of info but it's a lot more then I had before.  The reason I'm asking is because I'm upgrading my speakers and wanted to know if the factory amp be enough to give me better quality sound and be enough to drive the new set up.

Might try searching the archives I remember folks adding amps to the fact setup. But the fact speakers had what I considered a wierd impedance, like 3.1 ohms. Not really sure - if I find the exact figure I'll post it. Typically the impedance of the speakers needs to match the output of the amp. However if you add a big amp it may not matter.

Here's some info; http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/audio/imped.html

I'm not sure an upgrade to the OEM speakers is necessary to achieve better clarity and volume.

Until I started using the swimming type ear plugs, hearing the radio clearly on the super slab was very poor.

It's all the wind noise occurring around my ears that caused my problems.

The ear plugs cleared everything up.

The wattage output of the radio was too low for my needs.  That's why I've got a Sony XM-4S amp in my trunk and Polk Audio DB501 speakers front and rear.  Sweet!

A word of advice.  Don't buy a cheap amp and attempt to mount it under the fairing.  You don't want that weight up there and the potential exposure to moisture.

THRUD;   WUT  Shocked  I have an marine amp mounted under fairing & works well.  Added weight, I think your misleading some on the site. I researched this well before i mounted my amp.

Thanks to all who responded.  I replaced my front speakers with 4" Focal IC-100s (2-way coaxial, 50 watts rms/100 watts max). Replaced my back speakers with 4" Pioneer TS-D1002R (2-way, nominal 25w/Max 110w).  A world of difference from the cheep paper-thin original set up.  The backs were a piece of cake.  The front ones needed some modification.  It was worth every penny.  During the winter I'll put an amp in.  Nothing crazy, 75w/channel to let my new set up really shine.

Absoluetly Ricky-D it's mostly that darn wind noise, I can hear the stereo better with my modular helmet jaw bar pulled down. Well I wouldn't say better sound really or louder but cutting that wind noise out sure helps my old ears hear the radio better and clearer.  But then again I have been riding with an over sized windshield last winter and all 4 speakers upgraded with the Pold Audio and a 400WATT amp driving them. I can hear the stereo very well all the way up to 105-110 range after that it gets really crushed out with all the wind noise even with the stereo set at maximun volume...
Stock speakers no amp I could hear my stereo at well over 75-80Mph behind the stock windshield. (Just FYI:)

P.S. I am in the process of deciding if I will swap out my amp for a new one or just go back to the stock radio output power. I recently lost the front channel of my stereo luckily it is the fault of the amp or wiring not the actual radio itself.. verified by attaching the front speakers to the rear channel of the amp and the speakers still work and when I attach the rear speaker to the front channel of the amp then no noise, attach any speakers directly to any stereo output and all 4 channels will work. So it looks like the AMP is my fualting issue.

The higher wattage the better quality sound as per your home stero.

You want a power amp for better sound at lower volume. If you can get the same speaker output at, say 10 on the volume dial as you do at 20 with the stock system, the actual quality will be better.

As for weight, there are many good  marine or auto amps out there that are just 6-10 ounces...
