so, i took the valk out today to 'air' her out.  i hadn't ridden her since inzane but i have started her up and put her in gear and such.  she starts up all the time just fine.
i realized after i got home that i rode for about 25 miles with the petcock on off.  i wasn't taking it easy on her neither.
question:  what's up with that and should i be looking into a pingle?

thanks ahead of time.

Its very easy to think the OEM petcock is off when it isn't.. The lever has to be set just right.. If that wasn't the case I'd say its time for a Pingle,, I'm not a big fan of the OEM valve.. Some will suggest that you rebuild what you have though..

Since you have an OEM petcock you would buy a Honda rebuild kit for it. The Pingle is an aftermarket petcock.

Why would you even waste your money, just install the cover set as was mentioned. Nothing wrong with a stock petcock.

Here is one reason:

When I needed a cover set, I bought one, installed it and it worked great for a year or so, but there is no rebuild kit for the valve side of the petcock, that side wears out next and I was nearly stranded in the boonies on the way to Daytona.

At that point it was a new OEM or a Pingel (the Pingel was cheaper)

This is not a unique story...that OEM valve just isint up for the long haul IMHO (of course there are some that have lasted a long time)....but many that havent YMMV

The rebuild kit (cover set) WILL NOT fix a problem of the "off" position not stopping fuel from flowing.

Mario, before you go to the expense and effort of rebuilding or replacing your petcock be sure you understand what Patrick was telling you.

It's likely your petcock wasn't turned off.

If you don't turn it so you fell it drop into the position for off it may appear to be off but not be.  It's not necessarily a problem with the petcock.  It's the position it which it was left.

It's also possible to tighten the screw that holds the handle to the petcock so that it binds and doesn't allow for the turn you need, especially if the petcock is not quite aligned properly.

Be sure of what your issue is before you embark on repairs.

Hey mario,

If you want me to, I'll bring a cover set, spare petcock, and pingel with me to Fredericksburg.  As I'm a fan of the oem petcock, I'm not sure the pingel is the one favored by most here (it came with all the goodies in the project bike haul).  My guess, based on year and assumed miles, is that if there is a component failure, it's the diaphragm.  If that's correct, the K&L kit available from the good folks at Old Bike Barn is all you need and it's about half the price of a cover set.  Might ought to order one anyway just to have in a saddlebag...

BTW, I'm sure this public posting is redundant to the private plans or current tool bag contents of others you'll be with in Fredericksburg...
