My wife, Lisa has had this Shepherd/Retriever mix as a puppy. She named him Cowboy. Cowboy had a thing of going into seizures every now again, but would snap out of it in a few minutes. Then everything would be fine, as if nothing ever happened. Yesterday we noticed that Cowboy was not himself. He was very lethargic. It looked like he had another seizure but didn't get over it this time. He didn't eat, go to the bathroom, or anything. He did move around a bit, but nothing like he normally does. Well, he was the same this morning, so I went to work. Lisa called me about 10 this morning crying and wanting me to come home. Cowboy had taken a turn for the worse. She had decided to take him to the animal shelter and have him put down. I got home as soon as I could, and found him lying on the floor, breathing heavily some blood was on the towel Lisa had put him on. As she was getting dressed, I picked him up as gently as possible and started out the door to my car. As I got outside, Cowboy made a couple of wimpers and died in my arms.  God, I feel like crap. I killed our dog. Yeah, I know, it wasn't my fault and he was going anyway, but I just felt like it was my doing more than anything else. I debated on posting this, because I didn't want to bring anyone down and bum everyone out. But we are remembering all the great times and funny things that Cowboy gave to us. He is in Heaven right now chasing those squirrels that threw the nuts at him from the trees, and playing chase me chase me with one of this favorite toys. Have fun where you are at Cowboy. We will be together soon. We love you Cowboy. You will be missed Walt and Lisa |

My heart aches for you both. That's the hardest thing about loving and outliving pets. In time, the fun times will outweigh the grief you are enduring now.

A Dog's Purpose (from a 6-year-old).
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.
I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.
As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.
The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker’s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.
The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.
Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, ''I know why.''
Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try and live.
He said, ''People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life-- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?'' The six-year-old continued,
''Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.''
Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:
· When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
· Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
· Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy.
· Take naps.
· Stretch before rising.
· Run, romp, and play daily.
· Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
· Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
· On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
· On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
· When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
· Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
· Be loyal.
· Never pretend to be something you're not.
· If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
· When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.
· Live simply.
· Love generously.
· Care deeply.
· Speak kindly.

Hey Walt, that is the worst, having a good pet go like that or any other way. No good...we need to get out and go for a ride sometime, hope your works going ok, I will find out if I have a job around the first of the yr,,,Thanks for the info on the trunk rails,, I dont want them just posting ,,guess they aren't worth what he is asking,, I really don't even want my trunk at all, but I'm leary of "de stocking" it any more than I allready have. But will probably do it sometime non the less. Sorry to hear about your Cowboy, I'm sure hes playing with my old Jocky somewhere...Lab shepard mix, best dog ever. Paul.  |

Sorry for your loss, Walt.
We unexpectedly lost ours nine years ago. My sons tell me it was the first time they saw me cry. My eyes are getting a little moist right now, just thinking about it.

We know that no words can take away the pain of losing a good friend and dogs are truly mans best friend. We had to put our 15yr best friend down two days before Chirstmas last year and I still miss her from time to time. The pain wil lessen but the memories will last forever. Gods Peace be with you and your family.

Thanks for all the encourgaging words. We are slowly getting over it and will be fine. Time heals all wounds and it will heal ours. Its great to know we have such good people to lean on when we have those bad things that happen. Again, thanks to all out there.
