I went to adjust my valves today and got distracted, now I need to know how to determine TDC on compression stroke other than checking for loose valves.   I think I am 180 out.   Makes alot of noise now. Ran rough before.

Yes call me a DA...  Angry

Rotate crank (counterclockwise) till the timing mark 1_2 is on the mark. If you can feel àny looseness on both intake and exhaust, you're on TDC on a compression stroke.

I took the spark plugs outta mine when I did the valves, thought it would be easier to turn the crank. Does it turn okay with the plugs in???

Everyone is just guessing.  If you will tell us more of what you actually did, it will help us help you.

For example some have adjusted both valve sets for cylinders 1 and 2 at the mark and so forth for 3/4 5/6 In this case half of the valves are right and should be easy to correct.

Without knowing what you did we are just stabbing in the dark

Also if you dont have a Honda maintenance guide...getting one before continuing would be a good thing cooldude

How can you be 180 out ?? How did you manage that ?? What did you set them at ??
Just remove the sparklers and the center timing cover inspection plate.. Rotate the engine until the cylinder you want to work on comes up on TDC and check/set the lash.. Lash should .006" and .009"

Just because a piston is at the top  (TDC) does not mean it is correct to adjust the valve clearance.
Being a 4 stroke 1 visit of the piston to TDC is compression when you can set the valve lash, the other is when the exhaust stoke ends and the inlet begins and both valves will have less than zero clearance.
Unless you have really messed up the valve settings any piston at TDC on the correct timing marks should either have no clearance or clearance of the valves. If clearance  set that pair or go check the opposite cylinder. Read the manual and it will become clear very quickly when you check the first set of cylinders.
Sounds hard but in reality it is quite easy.
Cheers Steve

Blackduck is right.. I meant to rotate engine with thumb/finger  over the hole until compression is felt which means you're coming up on TDC and able to check the lash.. I guess I should have been more specific..

I do not know how I did it but I was 180 out.   Had my wife hold both lifters on #1 then moved through rolled it with the 17mm until no movement was felt on the intake /exhaust.  Then adjusted accordingly.

Purs like a kitten now.  Thank you all even for the stabs in the dark..... Lips Sealed
