I have a 99 standard. It has a tourer windshield. Bike run's excellent. Idle's

good. accelerate's good. I can go on an average 125 to 130 mile's before

hitting reserve. Never burned a drop of oil. My question I'm getting a heavy

exhaust smell especially under hard acceleration with no exhaust leak's. I have

heard that the windshield can cause this by creating a dead spot in the air

in the rider's area. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I don't ever remember getting exhaust fumes when I had my oem shield on,.....but....there is a huge pocket of dead air behind that thing.

Once in a while I'll get a whiff of exhaust, mostly under heavy acceleration.  Been happening since 99.

It only happens when all the stars are inline and the moon is in full.  Grin  Just kidding.

The OEM screen is a big piece of plastic, fur sur, and I'm sure when the wind is blowing just right and the girl is pumping hard, smoke will get curled up into the riders area.  Nothing to worry about.

I love my tourer screens, simple yet elegant, and can't think of anything that would make me change to something different.

Thank's for the info. Mine's not too bad and the same on not all the time I guess

wind blowing could keep some of the smell in there. I thought I read something on

here about truck stack's fixing this problem. Might give it a try. My wife say's every

time I come back from riding I smell like a muffler. But like you said I like the wind

screen. I might just have to smell like exhaust. BF what kind of pipe setup is that

on your's.

It's only once in a while and under full throttle thru the gears.  I always just caulked it up to a cross wind or something.

Never had the wife tell me I smell like exhaust, mainly cause I'm single. Smiley

Well....long story.  They started out as unmolested oem's.  Then I got a wild hair and cut the piggies.  Got a another wild hair and drilled the rear baffles.

Couldn't leave well enough alone and did the Ragnar cut on 'em (gutted the rear baffles).

Rode like that for a couple years untill the drone just about drove me nuts.

Added 18" AirFlow extensions, Grumpy's tips (the big bore ones) and installed an aftermarket silencer (meant to be used on boats).

It's back to pretty quite now and it has a really nice tone but still has some growl  cooldude......best of all, the drone is 99.9% gone.

These are the silencers (the ones on the left.....they don't weigh hardly anything....really light).....

Are you sure it's exhaust? On heavy accel and even heavier decel I get some gasoline smell. It goes away quickly so I don't see any problem with it; might just be sloshing and venting thru the cap. It seems so normal now that it don't worry me no more... Grin

I always catch fumes of SOME kind, on the Valkyrie.........exhaust or gas......it depends on which way the wind blows........

I chalk it up to......you are basically riding over a small CAR engine.  With a large gas tank over the  top of it............and ALL of that.............just right under your nose...........

You ARE BOUND to "smell" things, you would not normally smell in your automobile.......that is just part of the "CHARM" of owning and riding a Valk!!!

Never had any exhaust fumes going down the road behind a MS shield or the OEM shield. At idle that's a different story, do you do a lot of city riding?

City riding as little as possible. Most time's I notice it is at speed when throttling

it pretty hard. I checked the exhaust and no leak's. I have noticed I smell it more

on a windy day. At idle it will gas me up pretty good. But I know this is normal I had

a new 2001 standard that done the same thing at idle but it didn't have a windshield

on it. Actually this the first bike with a shield on it I've owned. I guess all that power

has to have a smell. Funny though When other rider's are behind me they say it doesn't

smell heavy of gas. I must be the human catalytic converter.    Grin

I never smelled any exhaust on my 99 I/S until I took the trunk off, With it off I get a whiff every once in a while, When I put it back on the smell is gone, I chalked it up to air flow.

I figured sometime's the airflow was pushing it past my nostril's. My 01

without the shield never had that smell. I don't mind it that much. Just

wondered if it was normal. Though 100 octane smell's a lot better. Kinda

like being at the hickory motor speedway.

Get a set of Baker Air Wings and it will knock about 95% of your smell.

Your wife must have a very sensitive nose.

Thank's RJ. My bike actually came with a set ( They were off the bike ) And only had one

panel cracked. I sold them to another valk rider. Wish I'd have kept them now. Might have

to look into a new set. And the wife does have a good smeller. I have to go 20 ft from the

house to let one rip! With a mandatory 2 minute air out spell.   Grin

Every had a bacalva face cover tucked down and under your windproof cold weather gear in sub freezing weather riding 500 miles, and had really good chili for supper the day before you left?  Now thats a smell to remember!  On the upside, you do get a warming effect every few minutes.   Shocked  Cheesy   Hoser  angel

Ever notice sometimes when you hit a bug and it pops over the windshield and then floats in the air between you and the shield? I would think that the exhaust is trapped in that dead air space too.
I've had clip on sunglasses get sucked off of my face and they float there also.

exit it to the right side once. Now I embrace the vortex! cooldude
