Have found that my bike only gets up to 115mph. I read up on the carburetor operation, got a very
good idea of how it functions.
Then went and asked two local, well respected bike mechanics, whats going on with my carbs?
Both guys answered that the carb/diaghram is likely pitted or torn. This prevents enough vacuum
from building up, the slider does not travel any further in its path, which acts like restricted throttle.

Both mechanics have pulled apart a lot 'o carbs, finding that these parts have been ruined by
ethanol in the fuel. I looked up the parts on internet, and inquired for price at a shop here....
Holy @%#&, it's like over $100 EACH. Shocked

Has anyone else had to replace these parts, is there a cheaper fix, or is there some other way of making a fix?

15   TOP    16107-KAZ-000      $29.32
I think this is the diaphragm, if it is the part I remember, it is floppy and rubber-like... I wouldn't
be surprised if it gets chewed up by ethanol...

18    PISTON, VACUUM  16111-MZ0-A00     $72.04
This is a hard plastic part I think... maybe they're ate up, but I'd sure check them
before doing anything... it is easy to get to these parts without taking much apart,
I was there when I changed my chrome carb tops (17) for Cobras...

Try checking out this guy's carb rebuild and cleaning on YouTube (has been posted in past).  Here is link to Part 1.  I think he has 9 parts and does a great job explaining and illustrating with video.  You will likely learn other things about the carbs that could be a factor.

When the diaphragm is drawn up by vacuum slide #18 and needles #3 raise (are pulled up),  thus opening the throttle body as will as metering fuel through main jets #29.  Metered fuel is drawn up through #22 into the throttle body mixing with air and on to the engine.

At no time does raw fuel come in contact (or get any ware near) the diaphragms.

By following instructions on how to shim or change needles you can easily check diaphragm condition.  They should be relatively soft and supple and free of any cracks / checking or pin holes.

I believe you will find they are just fine.

Just my 2 cents worth

if the diaghrams have damage u will know it during idle and part throttle cruise/accel.
these bikes really don't go much faster than what u stated when stock.

With the speedo error on most bikes,  you are could be doing 120 or better if it reads 115.  Tire diameter is also a factor, both front and rear.  Hoser  Wink

Speedometer error on all the Valks I've ridden result in the speedometer reading high.  I think that's by design.

Only the front tire diameter impacts the accuracy of the speedometer.  One could argue that the rear tire diameter could slightly change the gear ratio, but I doubt it would be enough to significantly impact top speed.

Is this their opinion or determined under laboratory conditions.

I must say, I have never had any fuel caused carb troubles, in over 100k.  I use gas according to price on the pump, lowest price in it gos, exception is the E85 made for flex fuel vehicles.  I use regular unleaded mostly, it still is available in copius amounts here in Kansas, and is usually priced the lowest.  No such thing as E15, at least not yet.  I probly will not use it as per the information going around on it.  JMHO. unless u put E85 in the bike there is no problem. The bike is designed by the Honda Engineers, not shop mechanics, to be safely run on E10. see owners manual.

What I'm getting from you all is that the diaphragm is likely ok. How about this idea then;

Another rider I know 72yrs old has run carbureted Wings for years. He suggested to me that
he has seen gunk built up in the path of the slider, preventing it from travelling up its path.

All he had to do, back then, was pull the slider out, clean the path, and all performance was
restored.

Has anyone seen this happen on the Valk?

good question.

we rebuilt my buddies carbs (45,000 miles) and the plastic part was very clean.
i think the rubber seals that  well enough. but that's just me.

If you feel your problem is not being able to attain the "top speed" that the bike should be able to obtain then I'd suggest to list any modifications that have been made to the bike.

A stock bike is probably the fastest of the Valkyries (desmog not withstanding) and most (performance) modifications will affect the top speed in a negative manner.

Motor condition is the other part of the equation. It's not the same after ten or so years. May feel the same but realistically, it is not!
